I am the director of the Institute of Electronics and Informatics Engineering of Aveiro (IEETA), scientific director of BMD Software, and a full professor at the Department of Electronics, Telecommunications, and Informatics (DETI), at the University of Aveiro. I have served as IEETA vice-director (2010-2018), held the position of DETI director (2001-2003) and vice director for four years, and served as a member of the Scientific Council of the University of Aveiro (2013-2017). I have been a member of the scientific committees for four scientific journals and 130 international conferences. Additionally, I have contributed as a reviewer for more than 40 journals, providing critical evaluation and feedback on submitted research manuscripts. I have also participated as an evaluator for scientific funding programs across multiple organizations. These include evaluations for the QREN, ANI and the Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia (FCT) in Portugal, over 12 years. Moreover, I was a member of the evaluation panels of the UEFISCDI in Romania, the Institut National de la Santé et de la Recherche Médicale (INSERM) in France, the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO), the Austrian Science Fund in Austria (FWF), The Israel Science Foundation (ISF) and the Brussels Institute for Research and Innovation (Innoviris). Outside academia, I became the Scientific Director of the Bioinformatics Unit at BIOCANT (2006-2009), a biotechnology research and innovation centre located in Cantanhede, Portugal. Committed to an entrepreneurial activity, I contributed to the foundation of two spin-offs. The first, BMD Software, was created in 2011 and is now a well-established SME in the medical informatics field. My research centers on investigating computational methods and data engineering techniques to uncover insights within biomedical datasets, essential for advancing personalized medicine and enhancing our understanding of diseases. Throughout my career, I have accumulated extensive experience in supervising academic work. I have supervised 20 doctoral students, and am currently the mentor of four students. Out of these 12 students have been awarded an FCT doctoral scholarship. Of the students who have completed their doctoral studies, 10 are currently faculty members in higher education institutions, and 8 hold prominent positions in the industry (two of whom have founded companies, of which they are CEOs). The scientific supervision has also extended to master's degrees (62), and undergraduate final projects (41). Additionally, I have served as an internship supervisor for 11 foreign doctoral students (from Spain, Colombia, and Croatia).
