I have received a BSc in Biology in 2007 and an MSC in Biotechnology Engineering in 2009. In late 2009 I was awarded a PhD Studentship from the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology and obtained a PhD in Endocrinology in June 2015 at the Dr López lab at the University of Santiago de Compostela. My PhD explored the central networks behind the action of BMP8B, and its effects on brown adipose tissue aiming at finding potential new drug targets to combat obesity. In that period I established international collaborations with researchers from the universities of Cambridge, Barcelona and Bergen. In these projects I was the responsible for the work studying the neuronal mechanisms of action of several hormones and drugs and their effects on adipose tissue, thermogenesis and energy homeostasis. Moreover, my PhD dissertation was awarded with cum laude honour and a prize to the best thesis in health sciences in the 2014/2015 term from the University of Santiago de Compostela. In July 2015 I started a post-doctoral position at the MRC-LMS in the Imperial College London funded by the Medical Research Council. Working with Prof David Carling and collaborating with the pharma company AstraZeneca I explored possible new mechanisms to tackle obesity. I developed new adipose tissue specific genetic mouse lines to study the effect of activation of the energy sensor AMPK in vivo. I was also responsible for the lab implementation of primary adipocyte culture protocols and the Oroboros respirometry technology to study adipose tissue metabolism. Moreover, I contributed to the mentoring activities of summer and master students. In September 2019 I joined the 3Bs Research Group. I am working under the scope of an ERC project, in a multidisciplinary team, combining state-of-the-art technologies with basic science. The goal is the development of a Pemphigus vulgaris diseased skin model and also novel adipose tissue models that will allow the study of biological processes in an environment representative of the native tissue and to be used for drug screening. I am currently co-supervising one PhD student and contributing to the mentoring activities of two other students. From my scientific work I obtained 5 first-author papers and 6 as co-author in high impact journals such as Cell, Cell Metabolism, Cell Reports, Diabetes and Nature Metabolism, 2 book chapters and 21 communications in national and international conferences. I currently have an h-index of 10 and 931/958 citations in Publons/Scopus. Additionally, I have contributed to lecturing in the PhD Program in Metabolism, Clinic and Experimentation at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Porto and acted as a reviewer for PLOS One in the fields of endocrinology and obesity, and for the Journal of Tissue Engineering and Regenerative Medicine. I was also an active member of GreeningLMS, an institute commission working towards implementing new forms of making science in an environmentally sustainable way.
