Gabriela V. Martins is a dedicated and accomplished researcher with a decade of expertise in BIOSENSING. She received her PhD in December 2018 from the Faculty of Science and Technology at the University of Lisbon (FCT/UNL), under the supervision of Prof. Goreti Sales and Prof. Elvira Fortunato. Her doctoral research, conducted at BioMark Sensor Research (ISEP, Porto) and CENIMAT (FCT/UNL, Lisbon), focused on developing innovative sensing devices for sustainable point-of-care platforms, with a particular emphasis on detecting oxidative stress biomarkers. This groundbreaking research significantly advanced electrochemical (bio)sensing technologies, enabling rapid and precise biomarker detection. Currently, Gabriela is a POST-DOCTORAL researcher at the CIETI/LabRISE research unit (ISEP, Porto), where she continues to push the boundaries of scientific innovation. From 2017 to 2020, she was the Principal Researcher for the NovSPE project, a collaborative initiative within the IBEROS Network (Spain/Portugal) - Bioengineering Institute for Healthy Aging (POCTEP/0245_IBEROS_1_E, €15k). This project revolutionized the production of high-performance, flexible screen-printed electrodes, opening new opportunities for innovative solutions to improve quality of life, particularly for individuals with age-related diseases. Gabriela’s leadership extends to the "SmartBioPatch" project, where she was the Project Leader (EXPL/CTM-REF/1095/2021, €50k). Funded by FCT and launched in January 2022, this 18-month initiative focuses on developing advanced biosensors integrated into flexible biomaterial dressings for effective chronic wound management. She has further demonstrated her expertise as co-Principal Investigator of another nationally funded FCT project (2022.07897.PTDC, €50k) and currently contributes as a team member in the International IBEROS+ project (INTERREG POCTEP: 0072_IBEROS_MAIS_1_E, €200k). Gabriela’s academic impact is evident in her h-index of 10 (Scopus), an extensive publication record with 16 peer-reviewed scientific articles (388 citations), and 4 book chapters. She has presented her work at numerous national and international conferences, delivering 12 oral and 12 poster presentations. Her commitment to mentorship is reflected in her (co-)supervision of 4 Master’s students, 2 Bachelor’s students (including one international), and 5 undergraduate interns. Her dedication to both research and education underscores her comprehensive approach to advancing scientific knowledge and fostering the next generation of scientists. Recognized for her expertise in electrochemical biosensors, Gabriela has been invited to serve as a guest editor for special issues in Polymers and Sensors (both Q1 journals). She has also contributed to the academic community as a member of a scientific panel for an Erasmus examination board (2019) and, more recently, was appointed as an advisor for grant assessments by the National Science Center of Poland (2024), one of the country’s largest agencies for fundamental research funding.
