Joana Ruela Heimburger Boavida completed her PhD in Marine Sciences, with specialty in Marine Biology and Conservation in 2016 by the Algarve University. She was a postdoctoral researcher at Ifremer in France, and a visiting scholar at the Mediterranean Institute of Oceanography (MIO) in France and at Centro de Ciências do Mar in Portugal. Joana has 16 articles published in scientific peer-reviewed journals, one book chapter, a book and a few technical reports; she has also submitted Marine Protected Area proposals in Portugal and engaged with the national nature administration (ministries and governmental agencies) to pursue the protection of vulnerable marine habitats and species. She has received three awards (National Geographic Society 2011, Lisbon Oceanarium 2010, Premio Start Interpreneurship 2008), and written several funded project proposals (overall >350k euros). During her academic and research training, Joana participated as Research assistant in one FCT project, Pos-doctoral Fellow in one EU H2020 project, Principal investigator in 2 projects and manager in one project, Research assistant in two EU-LIFE projects, provided technical development in one Mar2020 project (project writing), obtained one Assemble grant and collaborates in other projects (EU H2020 MERCES Spain, ANR France - consultancy, POSEUR Inforbiomares Portugal). In her professional activities, Joana interacted with 88 collaborator(s) in co-authorship of scientific papers. Joana has experience in internal project and budget management for national and international scientific projects. Joana has teaching experience at all levels (bachelor to master and doctoral) in Portuguese, English and French (Univ. of Algarve, Portugal; Instituto Gulbenkian de Ciência Programa Doutoral Ciências para o Desenvolvimento, Cape Verde islands; Univ. Aix-Marseille, France), in varied disciplines (e.g. Population genetics, Geographic information systems, R). Joana has been a mentor for numerous undergraduate and graduate students in Portuguese, Italian and French Universities. She regularly peer-reviews scientific manuscripts and project proposals for 6 international scientific journals and one international funding agency.
