Joana Araújo Alves de Campos

Joana Campos, after completing her degree in Biology at the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Porto (FCUP), furthered her academic journey by attaining a Master's degree in Quality Control from the Faculty of Pharmacy of the University of Porto (FFUP), being acknowledged with an Honourable Mention for her master's thesis by the Portuguese Nutrition Association. Overall, Joana has a decade of experience at UCIBIO@REQUIMTE BACT_DRUGS Research Lab in antimicrobial resistance research, with a focus on the detection, genomic epidemiology, and ecology of multidrug-resistant (MDR) bacteria. She completed her PhD in 2018 at FFUP, where her research centred on identifying high-risk clones of Salmonella, including using advanced omics techniques. In 2019, Joana joined the Institute for Research and Innovation in Health (i3S), an associate laboratory to the Portuguese Government and a leading biomedical research institution in Portugal, where she expanded her expertise into the human microbiome, bioinformatics, and immunology. By 2022, she transitioned to the biotechnology sector, conducting research within a cosmetics and pharmaceuticals company, focused in valorising natural compounds for the food, cosmetic, and pharmaceutical industries. In 2024, she served as a Researcher and Project Manager for the EU-funded WASTELESS (G.A.: 10108422), coordinated by University of Trás-os-Montes and Alto Douro (UTAD). Within this project, Joana focused on the valorisation of by-products, namely food products, feed and processing residues, to determine their potential for different biological activities, including antimicrobial. Joana was also selected as a candidate for scientific and technical support panels and working groups at the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA). Currently, she is a Professor and Researcher at the School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences (ICBAS), UP. Joana work has been successfully recognized in other professional activities, as mentor and supervisor of students from different Faculties of University of Porto, Portugal (13, 2009-2024); main arguer of Bachelor and Master degrees graduation, and PhD Seminars (10, 2017-2024); invited teacher in bachelor and master classes (2014-2017 in FFUP; 2023 in UTAD; since 2024in ICBAS); invited reviewer of several papers (since 2018), Journals Guest Editor of Special Issues (since 2021), and Books Editor (2023-2024).Moreover, Joana published 26 papers, and 1 book chapter (h-index=16; >1200 citations: 88.2% in the top 25% most cited documents worldwide; 94.1% in the top 25% journals-SJR and SNIP, and 88.2%-CiteScore), received 10 awards, and participated in 12 competitive funding projects, including with international collaborations.
