David Andrade obtained his PhD in Steel and Composite Construction from the University of Coimbra in September 2021, graduating with Distinction and Cum Laude. Since 2026, he has been an Assistant Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Aveiro, where he is an integrated member of the TEMA – Centre for Mechanical Technology and Automation. He is also a collaborator at the Institute for Sustainability and Innovation in Structural Engineering (ISISE), University of Coimbra. His research activity focuses on welding and joining technologies, additive manufacturing (with particular emphasis on Wire Arc Additive Manufacturing – WAAM), mechanical and microstructural characterisation of metallic materials, numerical modelling, and their application to steel, composite, and modular construction systems. His professional activities span scientific research, laboratory development and management, higher education teaching, supervision of MSc and PhD students, preparation of national and European research proposals, and coordination of large-scale collaborative projects. Over the last years, he has been actively involved in several high-impact research and innovation projects. He was a key researcher in the national project FRICTION 4.0 (POCI-01-0145-FEDER-032089), focused on the development of advanced tools for Friction Stir Welding incorporating temperature-sensitive coatings to enable real-time thermal control at the tool–workpiece interface. He also worked as a co-coordinator of the R2UTechnologies – Modular Systems project, a flagship initiative funded by the Portuguese Recovery and Resilience Plan (PRR), involving more than 30 companies and 18 non-business entities, with a global budget of approximately 215 M€. This project aims to transform the modular construction sector through technological innovation, digitalisation, and capacity building across industry and academia. In parallel, he is involved in the European RFCS project IAMFAT – Intelligent Additive Manufacturing for Improving Fatigue Strength of Welded Connections (Grant Agreement No. 101112614), which addresses the application of WAAM to large-scale structural components, fatigue performance, material characterisation, and standardisation. David Andrade has demonstrated strong scientific productivity and independence, having published more than 15 peer-reviewed articles in international ISI journals, participated in over 20 leading international conferences, and contributed to several invited and keynote lectures. He is also an inventor in 7 patent applications, including three international patents, mainly related to modular construction systems and additive manufacturing-based solutions. In addition, he is an active member of the Portuguese technical committees CT 220 – Additive Manufacturing and CT 182 – Execution of Steel Structures (Comissão Técnica CT182 – Execução de Construções Metálicas), contributing to standardisation activities and the transfer of advanced manufacturing and construction technologies into engineering practice.
