Martin Schimmel received the degree “Diplom Geophysiker” (Master in Geophysics, Cum Laude) from the University Fridericiana of Karlsruhe, Germany in 1992, and the Ph.D. degree from the Utrecht University, The Netherlands, in 1997. From 1997 to 2001, he was a Postdoc Research Fellow in the Institute of Astronomy and Geophysics, University of São Paulo, Brazil. Before becoming a research staff member of the GEO3BCN-CSIC (Barcelona, Spain) in 2008, he was with the GEO3BCN-CSIC as a recipient of the Marie Curie Individual Fellowship (2001-2003) at the European Commission’s Fifth Framework Programme and the Ramon y Cajal Fellowship at the Spanish Ministry of Education and Science (2004-2008). M. Schimmel is a seismologist and his main research interests include the physical phenomena of seismic wave propagation, the detection and understanding of the multitude of seismic signals in seismograms, and the different strategies to image and constrain the structure of the Earth interior. He is experienced and internationally recognized on the detection/identification of weak seismic signals and their use to constrain Earth structure, the study and usage of seismic noise for imaging and structural health monitoring, and the design of independent strategies to enhance seismic signals and/or to turn ambient noise into signals. M. Schimmel has more than 150 research articles with more than 110 indexed in the Science Citation Index most of them involving topics across seismology. H-index and number of citations are 39 & 6159 for Google Academics and 34 & 4443 for Scopus, respectively. Co-authors are from more than 15 different countries, showing successful international collaborations. A few publications are in subject areas such as engineering, computer sciences, biomedical sciences, planetary seismology and environmental sciences, which testify polyvalence and a broad scientific interest. He also participated in different competitive projects within and outside Europe, and has co-/supervised 8 Master and 12 PhD theses. At the moment, he is co-/directing 1 PhD student, 3 postdocs. Further, he serves on national and international committees/boards as for employment, assessing research quality, and Master/PhD thesis defenses. He is reviewer of more than 15 international journals and provides scientific evaluations for national and international funding agencies and institutions. From 2015 to 2021, he acted on the board of editors for Geophysical Journal International. M. Schimmel designed several new approaches to improve weak-signal detection and identification using individual seismic stations and one- or three-component arrays. His methods are based on new strategies and are data adaptive to increase constraints on the fine Earth structure. His methods lead to ground-breaking observations which permit, e.g., to better constrain inner-core shear velocity and have been used in patents (e.g., by Schlumberger Ltd.). Presently, he works on interferometric methods to image sedimentary basins and crustal structure, as well as to monitor structural variability, for instance, in active mines. Since 2017, he collaborates with NASA-InSight to reveal the internal structure of Mars.
