Alfredo Augusto de Carvalho Aires (alias Alfredo Aires) is Assistant Professor in the University of Trás-os-Montes e Alto Douro (UTAD), Vila Real, Portugal, with a PhD in Agronomical Sciences. He is also a researcher and full (integrated) member of CITAB - Centre for the Research and Technology of Agro-Environmental and Biological Sciences of UTAD and full member of the Associated Laboratory INOV4Agro (https://inov4agro.pt/), a strategic consortium of two R&D units, CITAB and GreenUPorto of Oporto University. His research has been focused on the study of climate conditions and cultural practices effects in plant and food composition, particularly in the variation of primary (vitamins, sugars and amino acids) and secondary metabolites (glucosinolates, polyphenols and pigments). His main motivation is to understand how nutrients and metabolites can vary and how they can be enhanced in order maximize their beneficial in human and animal health. Understanding these variations can affect antioxidant, antiradical and anti-inflammatory plant, animal and human mechanisms are another important set of objectives. Recently, he has driven his research to develop green extraction methods for polyphenols and other compounds from plant and crop matrices, their wastes and their by-products. His research activities are inserted in the lines "Innovative technologies and processes" and "Valorisation of bio-based products and co-products" belonging to the second thematic strand line-"Technology & innovation in Agri-food and Forestry chains for a more competitive bioeconomy" of CITAB and in the third thematic research line of Inov4Agro- Leverage local food systems¿ which is focused on fostering local food production systems and the respective short-supply chains. Alfredo Aires have several publications, in journals with scientific citation, communications in international and national seminars. Until now he has participated in research Projects as team member and in 1 project as principal investigator. His H-index in Scopus is 27 and in Web of Science/ISI 26. At this moment is the director of Agronomical Engineering grade (Licenciatura) and Director of Department of Agronomy of Agricultural and Veterinary Sciences School (ECAV) of UTAD.
