Chao Zhou

Chao Zhou is a tenure-track Assistant Professor in the Department of General and Romance Linguistics at the University of Lisbon. He is a researcher of the Center of Linguistics of the University of Lisbon and an external affiliate of the research group Empirical Foundations of Phonology at the University of Amsterdam. Dr. Zhou studied Journalism and Portuguese Studies at the Communication University of China (Nanjing), where he received the Outstanding Graduate Award in 2015. He later completed his postgraduate studies at the University of Lisbon. His MA dissertation (2017) on the L2 acquisition of Portuguese liquid consonants was awarded the research prize of the Portuguese Linguistics Society. During his PhD (2017-2021), he combined theoretical modelling and experimental methods to investigate he interaction between speech perception, production and orthography in L2 phonological acquisition. Prior to his current position (2022 - ), Dr. Zhou taught at the University of Minho (tenure-track assistant professor in Linguistics 2021-2022) and Polytechnic of Leiria (Limited-term appointment 2021). His current research lies at the intersection of second language acquisition, formal phonological theory and quantitative methods. He is particularly interested in the multimodal interaction in L2 speech learning and the development of effective assessment methods for L2 speech proficiency. His research has resulted in 6 articles in high-impact scientific journals (first author in 5), 2 book chapters, and 2 peer-reviewed conference proceedings. He has regularly presented his research outputs at prestigious international conferences in various fields, including second language acquisition (EuroSLA, New Sounds, BUCLD, GALA), formal phonology (Manchester Phonology Meeting, Going Romance, OCP, Annual Meeting on Phonology), phonetics (ICPHS, Interspeech) and psycholinguistics (AMLaP). Dr. Zhou has given 4 invited talks on his research to both second language teachers and researchers. He has also taught two summer schools on L2 phonological acquisition and a workshop on advanced statistical methods. Dr. Zhou has extensive teaching experience in Portuguese, English, and Chinese. He has been the (co-)supervisor of 4 MA dissertations (two completed) and member of the examination board for 2 PhD theses, 1 PhD qualifying examination and 9 MA dissertations.
