I began my academic journey earning a degree in Environmental Sciences from Évora University (2001), followed by an MSc in Applied Analytical Chemistry from FC-UL in 2004. Driven by a passion for renewable energy and sustainability, I pursued a PhD in Energy and Bioenergy at FCT-UNL, completing it in 2012. Over the years, my work has been guided by a commitment to advancing technologies that address climate challenges, particularly in bioenergy and CO2 capture and utilization. From 2016 to 2024, I worked as a researcher at CATHPRO/CQE-IST, where I specialized in CO2 capture and valorization. My efforts were dedicated to the development of advanced solid sorbents and innovative processes like solar-driven thermochemical energy storage using the Ca-looping method, as well as CO2 methanation. These projects showcased my ability to integrate chemistry, environmental sciences, and engineering to develop practical solutions for global energy challenges. In 2023, I took on the role of Adjunct Coordinator of the CATHPRO laboratory. Prior to this, I spent nearly 15 years at LNEG, focusing on fuels and biofuels characterization and thermochemical conversion processes. My work there deepened my understanding of bioenergy systems and their role in sustainable energy transitions. In 2007, I joined the European TrainMiC® program, which reinforced my dedication to lifelong learning and expertise in metrology in chemistry. This experience later translated into a significant role as an independent trainer, delivering over 400 hours of specialized courses for academic and industrial audiences. Beyond research, I have had the privilege of sharing my knowledge as an Invited Assistant Professor in the Chemical Engineering Department at IST (2022–2024). Mentoring has also been a deeply fulfilling part of my career, as I have guided undergraduate, MSc, and PhD students while contributing to thesis evaluation and fellowship committees. My academic endeavors have always been complemented by international collaboration. In 2022, I was part of successful applications for access to cutting-edge research facilities at CNRS-PROMES (France) and ENEA (Italy), securing funding for both. I also contributed to several Horizon Europe proposals, one of which was funded, further expanding my involvement in transformative research initiatives. Engaging with international networks has been central to my career. I have actively participated in initiatives such as the WIRE COST Action (CA20127) on waste biorefinery technologies, the ForMEQ Forum for Metrology in Chemistry, and the IETS IEA Technology Collaboration Programme, where I focus on circular bioeconomy and biomass-oriented industrial symbiosis. Nationally, I have fostered strong collaborations with research groups across various domains, including heterogeneous catalysis for CO2 methanation, nanomaterials for CO2 capture and storage, and modeling of sorbent deactivation. In 2023, I joined the organizing committee for the International Conference on Carbon Dioxide Utilization (ICCDU), a milestone event to be held in Portugal in 2025. Additionally, I serve as a Guest Editor for MDPI journals, curating cutting-edge research on CO2 capture, removal, and valorization technologies. Throughout my career, I have maintained a strong publication record, with 20 peer-reviewed articles (12 in Q1 journals), 2 book chapters, 4 preprints, and 47 conference presentations. My research impact is reflected in an H-index of 11 as of November 2024. These achievements demonstrate a dedication to advancing knowledge and fostering innovation in sustainable energy and environmental science. Looking ahead, I remain committed to leveraging my expertise to drive impactful research, mentor the next generation of scientists, and contribute to global efforts in sustainability and energy transitions.
