Filomena Carvalho Sousa

Filomena Sousa has a PhD in Sociology (2009, ISCTE IUL) and did a Postdoc in Anthropology - Intangible Cultural Heritage (ICH) (2010-2016, NOVA FCSH). Between 2016 and 2021, she was the Principal Investigator in her project "DCHPII - Digital Cultural Heritage: Platforms and Inventories of the Intangible" (IF researcher - funded by FCT Investigator Programme - Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology). She coordinated the Digital ICH Observatory and the MEMORIAMEDIA review (international, peer-reviewed and indexed in ERIH PLUS). She is a member of the National ICH Network coordinated by the Portuguese State and, since 2014, she is a member of the UNESCO National ICH Group. Because her team develops the DCHPII project in a UNESCO accredited NGO (Memória Imaterial), she participates in the sessions of the 2003 UNESCO Convention - General Assembly (Paris), and in the international sessions of the Intergovernmental Committee. Filomena Sousa co-translated the official Portuguese version (2018) of the UNESCO - Operational Directives for the implementation of the 2003 UNESCO Convention. Filomena Sousa co-founded the "MEMORIAMEDIA ICH e-Museum" (PT), one of the first ICH e-Inventories conceived in the spirit of the 2003 UNESCO Convention and founded the "Digital ICH community" - a world citizen science movement to map ICH e-Inventories. She is a member of the Institute for the Study of Literature and Tradition (NOVA, University of Lisbon) where she coordinated, for 3 years (2011-2013), the Working Group "Cultural Practices". Her work received 3 recognitions/honours. She participated in 6 funded projects (EU and/or National funds). She has 34 publications as the main author - 4 books, 9 book chapters, 15 publications in peer-reviewed journals/conferences and the coordination of 6 indexed journal issues. She published 27 online resources, datasets and video docs and made 63 oral presentations - 16 as keynote, 27 as an invited speaker and 20 as a speaker (21 international and 42 national). She has experience in mentoring and tutoring higher education students, professional internships and research fellowships. She has skills and experience in participatory methodologies and, since 2006, develops research projects in the context of digital platforms, policies and instruments for identifying, documenting and safeguarding Intangible Cultural Heritage.
