Graduated in Physics (Optics and Electronics) from the University of Porto, Portugal (1990), received the M.Sc. degree (cum laude) in Physics (Applied Optics) from University of Kent, Canterbury, UK (1992), Ph.D. degree (summa cum laude) in Physics (Applied Optics) from University of Porto and University of Kent (1997) and D.Sc. degree in Physics (Biomedical Imaging & Lasers) from University of Porto (2013). He has also an Executive-MBA (short version) from Católica Porto Business School, Portuguese Catholic University (2011). From 1990-98 he was Researcher at the Optoelectronics Center of INESC-Porto (now INESC TEC/CAP), Portugal, working on fiber optic sensing technologies and lasers. From 1998-1999, worked as Project Manager at the R&D Division of ENT S.A. (EFACEC Group) on fiber optic current sensors and "free-space" optical communication laser links. In January 2001, co-founded Multiwave Networks Inc. in California, USA, a company that manufactured fiber optic laser sources and later on that year Multiwave Networks Portugal where the main R&D effort was based. In 2005 he was Managing Director and co-owner of BlueSpan, Lda (acquired by Exporlux Group S.A., Portugal) which developed and manufactured custom electronic systems (such as intelligent LED illumination systems; custom CW and Pulsed laser drivers, dedicated signal processing electronics). From 2006-2007 he became Scientific Consultant of Multiwave Photonics S.A, and later on Product Marketing Manager (2008-2009) of the company, leading the development of new fiber laser sources for Medical and Industrial Imaging applications. He is also senior consultant of MW Technologies Lda. (Maia, Portugal) for the R&D and Product Development of fiber laser optical sources for biomedical applications market. At the present, he is Full Professor of Physics, Biophysics & Medical Technology at the Faculty of Health Sciences of University Fernando Pessoa, Porto, Portugal and Visiting Professor of the Centre of Biomedical Optics at University of Kent, UK. He is also Scientific Expert/Advisor of European Health & Digital Executive Agency (HaDEA) and for ICT (Information and Communication Technologies - Photonics Unit) at European Commission. He is also Scientific Consultant of several national and international companies working on advanced fiber optic sensors and optoelectronic technologies, mainly for biomedical and industrial laser markets. He has more than 80 publications in international journals and conferences proceedings, and 6 invention patents. Elected (July 2012) as Senior-Member of the International Society for Optical Engineering (SPIE) at USA, and he is also, regular member of the European Optical Society (EOS) and the Portuguese Society for Development of Optics and Photonics (SPOF), and invited-reviewer of 15 international journals on IEEE, OSA and IOP organizations.
