Susana Santos Moita de Oliveira Marques

Susana Marques (SM), PhD in Biotechnology (2012), is a Researcher at the Bioenergy and Biorefineries Unit of the National Laboratory of Energy and Geology (LNEG), where is the Responsible for the Thematic Area Biorefineries for the Bioenergy. SM has participated in 38 Portuguese and European R&D projects on lignocellulose bioconversion – e.g. BIOPRODUCTION (FP6), ProEthanol2G (FP7), BABET-REAL5 (H2020), BRISK2 (H2020) & ICARUS (HORIZON Europe) - and is co-author of 35 peer-review papers (H-index 18) and 3 book chapters. SM has experience in enzymology applied to intensification of processes integrating biomass deconstruction, fermentation to added-value bioproducts (e.g. ethanol and lactic acid) and downstream processing (tailor-adapted membrane bioreactors). Her skills have been consolidated by working in close collaborationwith industrial partners, on several R&D projects under sub-contracting by several Portuguese relevant forest and fuel companies, such as The Navigator Company, PETROGAL and PRIO Bio. Her PhD thesis dealt with upgrading of paper sludge into lactic acid, and the project was awarded an Honour Mention in the Green Project Awards 2009 (PT; R&D category). SM is currently (2019-2024) a Portuguese representative in the COST Action (Nº CA18229) Yeast4Bio (Non-Conventional Yeasts for the Production of Bioproducts) and also the Short-Term Scientific Missions (STSM) Coordinator of this Action.
