Carlos Duarte Lucas Antunes Simões

I am an archaeologist specialized in geoarcaheology, interested in the relation of evolution of past societies and their environment. My focus are adaptations of Prehistoric populations to changes in coastal ecosystems and to socio-economic advances, such as the emergence of farming. My approach is to investigate the behaviors and environments of past populations through their traces on sediments that they generated and soils where they lived. For that, I use interdisciplinary methods to study soils and sediments at the microscopic scale, to reconstruct archaeological formation processes, and specialize in micromorphology and ancient lipid biomarkers. As an archaeologist, I have directed field projects in Portugal, mainly Neolithic coastal settlements and Prehistoric shell-middens, both in the academic and private sectors, and collaborate in other projects investigating Paleolithic to Neolithic coastal and near-coastal contexts in Western Europe (Iberian Peninsula and Brittany), as a specialist geoarchaeologist. I also colaborate in a project investigating the first populations of the Amazon basin (Bolivia). Academically, I have a PhD in Prehistoric Archaeology (University of Cantabria, 2019), and I am author of journal articles, book chapters, and several presentations. I teach geoarchaeology and supervise students at the Master's degree at the University of Algarve, while have secured research funding for my projects, including as Principal Investigator of a prestigious Spreading Excellence and Widening Participation EU H2020 Granted to my project «SEArch». I am currently an FCT CEEC Junior Research Fellow at the ICArEHB in the University of Algarve.
