Antje Helga Luise Voelker completed the Doctorate in Natural Sciences (DSc/PhD) on 1999/07/21 at the Institut für Geowissenschaften of the Christian-Albrechts-Universität zu Kiel, where she also obtained her Bachelor/Pre-diploma in Geology in 1990 and Licence/Diploma in Geology in 1993. In 2001 she moved to Portugal where she has worked since; first as a postdoctoral fellow (until 2008) and later as a researcher. Currently, she is a researcher at the Portuguese Institute for the Sea and the Atmosphere (IPMA) and the Centre of Marine Sciences (CCMAR) at the University of the Algarve. She published 89 articles in journals, 11 section(s) in books or IODP Proceedings and 5 extended abstracts in Conference volumes. Her h-index in Scopus is currently 39. She was the principal investigator/lead proponent of 5 projects, one post-doctoral fellowship grant and one 5-yr research contract and participated as post-doctoral fellow or researcher in 15 additional projects. She supervises/d 4 PhD and 3 MSc theses, 2 post-docs, 1 visiting early career scientist and co-supervised 1 additional MSc. She is the international advisor of a post-doc at Peking University (China) (2021-2024). She collaborates with a wide range of (international) researchers from junior to senior level and aims to work interdisciplinary and to correlate climatic evidence from different climate archives. She studies centennial-to-orbital scale climate variations and their impacts on the thermohaline circulation and ecosystems in time intervals ranging from the recent past to the early Pliocene and in deep-sea records recovered from polar to subtropical regions. Her basic tools are the shells of planktonic and benthic foraminifers and their stable isotope and/or trace element signatures. She also works with sedimentary data (e.g., grain size, XRF element data) and integrates evidence from other microfossil groups and organic biomarkers in her studies. A lot of her current research focuses on paleoceanographic and ecosystem changes on the Portuguese margin during the last 1.7 Ma, including the history of the Mediterranean Outflow Water. Another study reconstructs early Pliocene climate in the mid-latitudinal North Atlantic and contributes to the PAGES PlioMioVAR working group (WG). In addition, she studies the stable oxygen, hydrogen and carbon isotope signals of modern water masses in the North Atlantic, contributing to GEOTRACES and PAGES HydroCoral2k WG efforts. She currently leads an international intercalibration exercise on such analyses and is a co-lead proponent for a SCOR WG on "Towards best practices for Measuring and Archiving Stable Isotopes in Seawater". She regularly reviews manuscript for a wide range of journals, receiving an AGU Editor's citation for Excellence in Refereeing for Paleoceanography in 2016, and evaluates proposals submitted to funding agencies from around the world. Since November 2018 she is an editor of the journal Quaternary Science Reviews and since May 2023 an editorial board member for the journal Marine Geology. In 2020, she reviewed chapters of the Second Order Draft of the WG I contribution to the Sixth Assessment Report (AR6) by the IPCC and drafts of the 2050 Science Framework "Exploring Earth by Scientific Ocean Drilling". She represented Portugal as national delegate in two international programs (IMAGES, COST-Action ES0907 INTIMATE) and represents Portugal since June 2010 in the ECORD Science Support and Advisory Committee (ESSAC) of IODP. Between June 2020 and May 2023 she was a member of the IODP Science Evaluation Panel (SEP-Science). In May 2022 she was nominated to the OSPAR Climate Change Expert Group (until Sept. 2023) and contributed to chapters of the Quality Status Report 2023 on Climate Change. Since May 2021 is also a member of the ICES WGINOR group. In 2021 and 2022, she contributed to the Joint Pilot Action "Data" of the AANChOR program. She was a jury member for 2 funding programs and in 12 PhD defense committees.
