Cátia Marina Machado Monteiro

I am a Postdoc researcher at the CoastalWarming research group at CIBIO/BIOPOLIS. Throughout my academic career, I have been focused on studying responses of ecologically relevant marine species to environmental change. Understanding these responses is crucial to identify and predict the impacts of ongoing climate change on foundation species. have been building a network of international multidisciplinary researchers since my early academic career (MSc and PhD abroad with several partners). I recently received two highly competitive research grants in the quality of Principal Investigator (PI). I am leading the BIOINTERACT project (FCT 2023-2025, 250k), in which we look at how foundation species modulate microclimate and biodiversity across a latitudinal gradient in temperature. I lead a team of 18 researchers, including senior and junior doctorates, students, and technicians. I also serve as the PI of BIOPOLIS, the only Portuguese institution involved in the EU-funded ANERIS project (2023-2026; BIOPOLIS €400K, total €10M), coordinated by ICM-CSIC (Spain). I am also making significant contributions to other ongoing projects within my group, namely the Coastal Coupled Temperature Biodiversity Observation Network, CCTBON — the world's largest rocky shore temperature and biodiversity monitoring network. In the past, I have contributed to international projects such as FutureMares (EU, BIOPOLIS: €100k, total: €9M), BLUEFORESTING (EEA Grants, BIOPOLIS: €19k; total: €1M) and to national projects such as ThermalBuffer, SEEINGSHORE, NorteRocks and AdaptChange. I am also firmly committed to education, teaching BSc and MSc courses at ICBAS/U Porto (where I am an Invited Auxiliary Professor), and supervising MSc and PhD students.
