Ana Catarina Martins graduated in Biochemistry in 2015 and holds a MSc in Applied Biochemistry, with a specialization in biomedicine, from the University of Minho. She obtained a PhD in Molecular and Cell Biology at the University of Porto in Portugal, under the supervision of Dr. Margarida Saraiva (i3S) and co-supervision of Dr. Elsa Logarinho (i3S), and Dr. Paulo Vieira (Pasteur Institute) in September 2023. During her PhD, she was awarded two travels grants, one by the Portuguese Society of Immunology (SPI) and another by the European Federation of Immunological Societies (EFIS), to conduct 18 months of her PhD at the Pasteur Institute, Paris, in the Lymphocytes and Immunity group, under the supervision of Dr. Paulo Vieira. The studies she conducted advanced our understanding of the biology of IL-10 and its potential and limitations as a therapeutic tool. As a result of her contributions to the field, she co-authors a study regarding the mechanisms of the immune regulation elicited my IL-10 in the context of intestinal inflammation (Cardoso et al., Frontiers in Immunology, 2018) and, more recently, she first co-authors a study on how IL-10 promotes emergency hematopoiesis (Cardoso and Martins et al., Cell Reports, 2021). Following up on this study, she also discovered an unexpected link between IL-10 and cellular senescence, whose manuscript is under preparation for publication. Currently, Ana Catarina joined the Aging and Tissue Repair laboratory at Instituto de Medicina Molecular João Lobo Antunes in Lisbon, led by Dr. Pedro Sousa-Victor and Dr. Joana Neves, as a postdoctoral researcher under the research project “The interplay of Aging, Immune Signaling and Stem Cell Function”, funded by the European Research Council (ERC-2023-COG, HORIZON-ERC).
