Ciencia vitae Resumo Margarida Pinho Lopes is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Civil Engineering at the University of Aveiro. In 2006 she completed her PhD in Civil Engineering, in the field of Geotechnical Engineering, at the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto. Between 2013 and 2019 she worked in the United Kingdom, namely at the University of Southampton. Margarida carries out research in civil engineering, namely in geotechnical engineering and the application of geosynthetics, as well as in engineering education. Current research interests include: geotechnics for transportation infrastructure; promoting sustainable geotechnical solutions, namely by assessing the potential valorisation of wastes and industry by-products as alternatives to natural fill materials or soil reinforcements; developing nature inspired solutions for micro-reinforcement of soils, at the scale of soil particles; numerical models for structures with geosynthetics. Margarida's research skills cover numerical modelling, laboratory simulation, field instrumentation and geosynthetics testing, mainly for soil reinforcement applications. She is responsible for several curricular units in the area of Geotechnics. Margarida is also a member of several technical committees on geosynthetics for ISO and CEN (WG3, Mechanical properties; WG4, Hydraulic properties; WG5, Durability; W G6, Design for geosynthetics), the International Geosynthetics Society, IGS (Hydraulic Applications, Stabilisation, Reinforcement), the International Society for Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering, ISSMGE (TC218 Reinforced Fill Structures, TC306 Geo-Engineering Education). Margarida is/was a member of the editorial board of the International Journal of Geosynthetics and Ground Improvement (2017-2024), Geotecnia (2021-), ICE Geotéchnique (2020-2022), Soils and Rocks (2021-2022), and ICE Geotechnical Engineering (2016-2019).
