João Carlos de Almeida e Silva
João Almeida e Silva, a graduate architect from the Faculty of Architecture of the University of Porto (FAUP, 2005), holds
a postgraduate qualification in Housing Project and Ways of Inhabiting (2013) and a Master’s Degree in Architecture (2020)
from the same institution. He worked with various architecture studios in Portugal and Japan (2003-2014) and collaborated
with the Educational Service of the Serralves Museum of Contemporary Art (2015-2021). In parallel, he worked as a freelance
architect and curator, earning recognition through various distinctions.
He was awarded a scholarship from the Fundação Oriente to investigate Japanese domestic spaces within the project “Primitive
Domestic Future” (2012-2013) and conducted research for the project funded by the Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT)
titled "The Site of Discourse" (IHA/FCSH/NOVA, 2014-2015). João also co-curated the exhibition "Thinking Architecture Through
Publication" at Museu do Dinheiro, Lisbon, Portugal (2015) and curated the exhibition “Sou Fujimoto: Primitive Domestic Future”
at Museu do Oriente, Lisbon, Portugal (2019).
Currently, with a 4-year grant supported by the FCT (2021-2025), he is developing his Ph.D. thesis in the FAUP’s Architecture
Ph.D. Programme. The thesis, entitled "Advertising in Review: Interferences between Architecture and Publicity", focuses on
the "Eva Houses" phenomenon, and his travel proposal, "The Presence of ‘Eva’: Finding Houses that were Advertising Gifts",
received an honorable mention in the 18th edition of the Fernando Távora Prize (2022). He frequently presents preliminary
research findings at national and international conferences and contributes to scientific publications dedicated to architecture,
media, and semiotic studies, some of which have already been funded by the Center for Studies in Architecture and Urbanism
(CEAU), an institution he joined as a researcher in early 2023.
In December 2023, he has been awarded an R&D@USA Scholarship grant from FLAD (Luso-American Development Foundation), to join,
in the first semester of 2024, the School of Architecture at Princeton University as a Visiting Student Research Collaborator.
