L. Côrte-Real obtained her degree in Technological Chemistry (2010) from Faculdade de Ciências, Universidade de Lisboa (FCUL), where she also completed a master's degree in Biomedical Inorganic Chemistry: Applications in Diagnosis and Therapy (2012). During her master's project, she had the opportunity to work at Campus Tecnológico e Nuclear (C2TN) and Instituto de Medicina Molecular (IMM), studying the mechanisms of action of promising organometallic Ru compounds for cancer therapy, which gave her all the necessary tools to become independent in several biological assays (e.g. cell viability assays - MTT; evaluation of the cell death mechanism and cell cycle arrest - Flow cytometry), that are now an important complement of her scientific path. In June 2019, she obtained her Ph.D. in Chemistry (specialization in Inorganic Chemistry - Full score) from Universidade de Lisboa, where she developed polymer-metal based compounds for cancer targeted therapy. During her Ph.D., she was awarded a Fulbright grant to study her metallodrugs in the zebrafish model at Rutgers University, New Jersey, USA (February 2018 - July 2018: 6 months), further expanding her expertise panel. After her Ph.D., she was a Junior Researcher at Centro de Química Estrutural (CQE), FCUL, in the scope of the Project Lead4Target - PTDC/QUI-QIN/28662/2017 (PI: Dr. Andreia Valente) working on the synthesis, characterization and determination of the biological activity of metal-based compounds with potential as anticancer drugs and on ligand functionalization with relevant biomolecules for cancer targeted therapy. She also focused on the preparation and characterization (by Dynamic Light Scattering) of compounds' nanoformulations using drug-delivery systems for cancer therapy. In August 2021, she won a Postdoctoral fellowship at CQE@Instituto Superior Técnico (IST), working on novel nanoplatforms for targeting melanoma with 8-hydroxyquinoline metal complexes (Project: PTDC/QUI-QIN/0586/2020; PI: Prof. I. Correia). L. Côrte-Real has supervised so far 10 undergraduate students (3 Erasmus students, 1 Summer Internship student, 1 IASTE Program student) and will supervise 3 MSc students (1 ongoing; for 9 months). She has 24 scientific papers published in international peer-reviewed journals (9 as first author), with over 500 citations; 34 oral communications: 5 by invitation; 9 as invited co-author; 8 as speaker and 12 as co-author, and an h-index of 13 (Scopus). She was recently awarded an FCT-RESTART grant to start her independent research career, working on Cu(I)-NHC coumarin-based conjugates for treating aggressive cancers via folate-targeted approach.
