Isabel Marín Beltrán completed her PhD in Marine Sciences at Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (Barcelona, Spain) in July 2017. During her PhD, Isabel studied the effect of anthropogenic and mineral aerosols on bacterial communities of the Mediterranean Sea, acquiring expertise in the areas of Marine Biochemistry and Microbiology. She has a MSc Degree in Marine Sciences at the Universitat de Barcelona, where she conducted a project on the determination of Caretta caretta foraging areas within the Mediterranean Sea, based on their isotopic signature. She completed the BSc in Marine Sciences at Universidad de Cádiz (Spain), after studying Geology (BSc, 3 years) at Universidad de Zaragoza. In 2019, Dr. Marín-Beltrán got a CEEC individual postdoctoral fellowship (Junior Researcher) in the framework of the FCT - Scientific Employment Stimulus program (project "MASS": Microplastics in the Aquatic Environment; CEECIND/03072/2017). In this project, she is evaluating potential sources of microplastics to the coastal environment, as well as looking for environmentally safe solutions to remove microplastics from the environment. Namely, by means of bacterial communities and isolates coming from the marine environment and from wastewater treatment plants. The work is being developed at Laboratory of Environmental Technologies, at Centre of Marine Sciences (CCMAR), leaded by Professor Maria Clara Costa. Isabel has published 10 articles in high impact journals (among them, Science of the Total Environment, Marine Pollution Bulletin), 6 of which she is the first and/or corresponding author. She also authorships two conference proceedings and two book chapters. She is also author of two "insight" comments published in the journal Science as part of the "NextGen Voices" series. She regularly contributes to peer-revision of manuscripts on scientific journals. In addition, Dr Marín-Beltrán was invited to review a report prepared by the Instituto Português do Mar e da Atmosfera (IPMA) as part of the EU Marine Strategy Framework Directive, as an expert on marine debris. As PhD student, she participated in three (national and international) projects, and she was visitant student at Institut Méditerranéen d'Océanologie (MIO) of Marseille (France), at KTH Royal Institute of Technology of Stockholm (Sweden), and at Univeristà degli studi di Genova (Italy). After completing her PhD, she was visitant researcher at Heriot-Watt University (UK). As postdoc, she was research collaborator in two international and one national project. She is currently part of the team of one national (FCT funded) project, and since December 2023 leads her own project to assess the impact of microplastics in cryospheric regions (project "MAFIHA"; 2023.00192.RESTART). Dr. Marín-Beltrán has disseminated her research through 15 oral presentations in two national and 11 international seminars and conferences, including three invited talks. She has also presented her work through posters at several national (in Portugal and Spain) and 7 international conferences. Isabel has (co-) supervised the experimental work of >10 BSc and MSc students, and the final projects of 6master students. Further, she is external advisor of a master student at University of Philippines. She is currently co-supervisor of a PhD student at University of Zaragoza (Spain). She has been member of the evaluation panel of 3 master and 1 PhD projects. Last but not least, Isabel is very active as both organiser and participant of/at outreach activities aiming at transferring knowledge to the general public. She has produced several videos aimed to promote the sustainable use of resources, available at: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCJYY5LstRf4an1KLGMzvawA. Keywords: environmental pollution; microplastics; bioremediation; bacterial assemblages; atmospheric deposition; coastal waters; wastewater; cryosphere.

2021/05/02 - 2021/06/30 In pandemic times, it was difficult to conduct face-to-face outreach activities. Then, several researchers of CCMAR, leaded by the Communication Department, recorded short videos to explain our research to the general public, mostly to school students. In the video "3 minutos debaixo d'água: Microplasticos"(https://www.facebook.com/CentrodeCienciasdoMar/videos/341347350785407), I present my research on microplastic pollution, and suggest solutions to reduce this global problem.

Scientific expedition

Activity description Institution / Organization
2024/06/06 - Current Along the SEA-EU Cruise ¿"With Baltic Water to the Arctic¿", it will be evaluated the export of nutrients and contaminants from the Baltic Sea to the Norwegian coast European University of the Seas, Spain
2022/04/25 - 2022/05/06 Through the scientific cruise "Crowd-Science for the Med Sea" (https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/crowd-science-for-the-med-sea--2#/), 4 young researchers (including myself) will develop a small scientific project on board of the sailboat "Independence". I will conduct research on macro- and microplastics pollution around the island of Sicily, where information available on this topic is scarce. The samples will be mostly processed on-board, but chemical analysis will be further performed at CCMAR, by means of micro-FTIR. Project Manaia, Austria
2014/09/24 - 2014/09/30 During the scientific cruise "MIFASOL" (as part of the project "DOREMI), samples from the NW Mediterranean were collected to analyze biogeochemical variables and perform microcosm experiments to assess the impact of aerosols on marine microbial communities. https://www.icm.csic.es/es/noticia/empieza-la-campana-oceanografica-mifasol Institut de Ciències del Mar, Spain
2011/02/01 - 2011/02/03 As part of my MSc in Marine Sciences, I participated on the research cruise “UNIBARNA 2011”, around Ría de Vigo (Spain), to learn about the methods used in oceanography to collect samples. We also analysed sediment, zooplankton and fish samples on-board. Universitat de Barcelona, Spain
2009/09/14 - 2009/09/16 I took part on a short research cruise as researcher assistant at Universidad Autónoma de Baja California (UABC). During this cruise, we collected samples for biological, geological, chemical, and physical analysis to characterize seawaters offshore Ensenada, in the Pacific Ocean. The samples were further processed in the laboratory during the practical laboratory lessons, in which I provided assistance to the teacher.
