Mónica Amaral Ferreira has a PhD in Territorial Engineering with experience in Civil Engineering with special emphasis in Earthquake Engineering. She has 20 years of experience in the field of seismic risk assessment and disaster mitigation. Before coming to Instituto Superior Técnico in 2004, she worked at Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica e Vulcanologia - Sezione di Milano (INGV) as a researcher during a year. In 2006 she got a post-graduation in Natural and Technological Risks at Faculdade de Ciências, Universidade de Lisboa. In 2012 she completed a PhD degree in Territorial Engineering on the topic of seismic risk in urban systems. Her area of specialty is urban planning in seismic risk zones, disaster risk reduction and management, business continuity, supply chain management and resilience, education and risk communication. Mónica served on post-earthquake reconnaissance teams in Portugal (Azores), China, Italy, Haiti, Spain and Japan, assessing building damage, interviewing survivors of the events and understanding the urban earthquake risk problems. This experience contributed to the development of the concept of the urban Disruption Index, DI. She has been working with partner organizations (at a national and international level), focusing on risk assessment, urban interdependencies, cascade effects, risk awareness, risk mitigation, and risk communication to the public and to the scholar community. Since 2012, this research has resulted in more than 40 professional publications that Mónica Ferreira has authored or co-authored. She is also editor of the ¿Lisbon in Motion workshop¿ book. She participates and collaborates with multi-stakeholders in disaster risk reduction and awareness-raising at the national and local levels, namely Autoridade Nacional de Proteção Civil, Câmara Municipal de Lisboa, Câmara Municipal de Portimão, Câmara Municipal de Sines, Juntas de Freguesia, as well as the private sector (owners and operators of critical infrastructures: EDP, CTT, SONAE, Jerónimo Martins, Complexo Industrial de Sines, NOS, Siemens, etc). These networks create space for learning and sharing, contributing to build disaster resilience. She has been involved as post-doctoral researcher and project manager in several EU funded projects. She is highly driven to explore and advance innovative pathways that enable people to communicate more effectively before, during and after times of crisis. Mónica developed the "Treme-Treme" serious game, being an opportunity to provide educational skills on earthquake response and mitigation to children, educators and parents (www.treme-treme.pt). She was involved on the production of the educational film "Before it's too late", on the video awareness campaign "Move, Protect and Secure" and participated in the development of several KnowRISK tools. She has been invited to participate in citizen science initiatives and TV programs. She is invited by several schools to teach students about earthquake science and preparedness, using tools developed in the last years. Ultimately she is creating accurate and effective communication strategies and products involving Science Technology Engineering and Math (STEM). She was one of the organizers of "Lisbon in Motion workshop" for young researchers (MSc and PhD students) during the 15th World Conference, in 2012, in Lisbon. Since 2021 she is Member of the municipality Program ReSist (Programa municipal de promoção da resiliência sísmica do parque edificado, privado e municipal e infraestruturas urbanas municipais, Câmara Municipal de Lisboa).
