Adolfo Figueiras (AF) completed his Doctorate in Medicine, in 1994, Master in Public Health, in 1990, both from the University of Santiago de Compostela, as well as a Master in Pharmacoepidemiology, in 1993, from the Autonomous University of Barcelona. Currently, AF is University Professor at the University of Santiago de Compostela, head of the CIBER Epidemiology and Public Health group at the University of Santiago de Compostela and coordinator of the Epidemiology, Public Health and Health Services Evaluation group at the Health Research Institute of Santiago de Compostela. AF has participated in 25 funded research projects, 13 of them as principal investigator (PI), 10 of these as PI in competitive public funding in Spanish Health Research Institute. He is also a researcher in three international projects. The methodological capabilities acquired by AF allowed him to: (1) develop new statistical methods (interaction analysis, calculation of measures of effect of dose-response relationships for continuous exposure variables); (2) apply qualitative techniques for the identification of knowledge, expectations, and attitudes; (3) develop and validate questionnaires; (4) employ all observational, but also experimental, epidemiological study designs, mainly in the form of cluster-randomized controlled trials. AF is the author of more than 150 articles, most of them published in prestigious journals in his research field (such as, JAMA, Am J Epidemiol, Epidemiology Environ Health Perspect, Drug Safety, Med Care, J Antimicrob Chemother). AF is an evaluator of the main Spanish, Portuguese, and French biomedical research agencies. Since 2009, he belongs to the Editorial Committee of the journal Drug Safety (Q1), the most prestigious in the fields of pharmacoepidemiology in general, pharmacovigilance and safety of medicines. He has won several national awards, including the two first prizes for the best article of the Spanish Society of Epidemiology, a first prize of the Spanish Society of Pharmacists of Primary Care and the first prize of the IV edition of Esteves awards. The impact of all his scientific activity is reflected in the number of citations: he is currently the most cited Spanish author in the field of pharmacoepidemiology, with 8483 citations, and an h-index of 51.
