Arunava Pradhan is working with Junior Researcher contract at CBMA, IB-S, University of Minho (UM) since 2019. He completed his B.Sc. in Microbiology (2005) from University of Pune, India, and M.Sc. in Molecular Biology (2007) from West Bengal University of Technology, India and was awarded Doctor in Science, specializing in Biology from UM, Portugal in 2013; then started Post-Doctoral research at CBMA (2013-2019). His Doctoral Thesis entitled “Impacts of nanoparticles to microbes and invertebrates: from community responses to cellular targets” was strongly recognized by Scientific Community and received 2 international awards: i) Second prize with Special mention for Best Doctoral Theses (2012-2013) Award 2014 from Iberian Association of Limnology; and ii) Subsidiary prize for Best PhD Dissertation (2013-2014) Award 2015 in Freshwater Sciences from European Federation for Freshwater Sciences. Over the last few years, he is developing research aligned with CBMA strategies and EU and UN SDG2030; he is investigating the i) structural and functional effects of emerging contaminants (ECs), including nano- and microplastics, pharmaceuticals, MOFs, agrochemicals, metal-based engineered nanoparticles (NPs) and other persistent organic micro-pollutants, on freshwater ecosystems under realistic exposure scenarios; and ii) interactive effects of these ECs with climatic factors (temperature, post-wildfire runoffs) at community to cellular level along food-chains using integrative approaches(e.g. molecular, biochemical, biomarkers, OMICs etc.). More recently, he started to develop eco-sustainable remediation strategies using nanotechnology and natural sources (e.g. plant/microbe/invertebrate-based Biochar and Chitosan NPs; membranes) to treat freshwaters from ECs, and applying models and indices using machine learning and artificial intelligence approaches to better understand the hazardous impacts, early alarming and fast remediation strategies against ECs considering global change scenarios. He participated in 19 national/transnational/international network-based projects (e.g. EMERGEMIX; STREAMECO) which led to 25 scientific publications in international journals. He also participated in 33 oral (27 international and 4 invited) and 26 poster (18 international and 2 invited) communications in scientific meetings. His research led to several international and national collaborations with renowned research units (e.g. Martin Luther University; Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research – UFZ; Leibniz Institute of Freshwater Ecology and Inland Fisheries; Berlin Institute of Ecology - TU; University of Almería; Eawag - Swiss Federal Institute of Aquatic Science and Technology). In last 5 years, he has published 16 scientific papers, mostly in Q1 journals and also 2 book chapters. He received Best Oral Presentation Award from Transmitting Science in 15th European Ecological Federation, Ecology across borders: Embedding Ecology in Sustainable Development Goals, 18th National SPECO Meeting, in 2019, Lisbon, Portugal. In past few years, he has also supervised several students of BSc (8 concluded), MSc (1 concluded, 5 ongoing), PhD (1 concluded), research interns (3 concluded), and also mentored several students; this strengthened his independent research and leadership quality. Arunava was in Jury of MSc and PhD defense and has been member of many scientific associations, evaluation and organizing committees including International Conference PLPF9 in 2022, in Braga, Portugal. He has attended and co-organized several scientific workshops and provided training in several advanced international courses on ecotoxicology and stress ecology, and became member of many scientific associations and advisory committees. He is also a reviewer of several international Q1 journals. Additionally, he has received several distinctions, awards, titles, and grants for his research. He has also been involved in several outreach/science communication activities.
