José Joaquim de Melo Órfão (PhD, Faculty of Engineering of University of Porto - FEUP - 1987) was Associate Professor at FEUP (he has been retired since July 2020) and is Senior Researcher at the Associate Laboratory LSRE-LCM. Most of his research has been focused in the area of Carbon Materials and their applications in Catalysis (mainly Environmental Catalysis) and Adsorption; the development of catalysts for Biomass Conversion into Fuels and Chemicals is also a current area of interest. He co-supervised 12 PhD theses, 7 Master theses and the research work of 2 Postdoctoral Researchers. José Órfão co-authored about 175 publications in leading international journals, which were cited 14320 times in 10358 different articles; this corresponds to a current H-index equal to 61 (Web of Science, 28/02/2024). He is also co-author of about 275 communications in scientific meetings, 17 chapters in books and a textbook on Heterogeneous Catalysis (in Portuguese).
