Muhammad Tanveer Ul Islam, is a researcher at the Centre for Management Studies at the Instituto Superior Técnico (IST). After graduation in mechanical engineering in 2009, he joined a progressive engineering firm in his home country, Pakistan. Professionally, he has vast field experience in engineering and project management. His major projects include the installation and commissioning of different industrial systems, including a combined cycle power plant and its allied systems used for electricity generation. After five years of field experience, he started a master’s degree in flight vehicle design (aerospace) from the Beijing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics, Beijing, China. After finishing his master’s degree with honors in 2017, he joined a public engineering firm in Pakistan and started a research career in the "research and development department." of his firm. During his multiple years of experience, he has gained solid experience in research activities within a specific sector, which has enabled him to carry out research activities independently and also work with a group of researchers in a coordinated and efficient way. He has experience both in engineering and management settings and a strong ability to work effectively with teams, manage complicated projects, and communicate complex ideas in a clear and concise manner. In October 2023, he enrolled in the doctorate programme in engineering and management at IST. His main interests concern business analytics and operational research and management science, emphasizing the development of efficiency, productivity, and decision analysis models, and their applications to sustainable development and energy. His PhD research topic is to address and solve strategic problems faced in the energy sector by harnessing operations research analytics and tools (multicriteria decision analysis, data envelope analysis), and machine learning to contribute to the UN’s Sustainable Development Goal for sustainable and efficient energy production (Goal No. 7). He is being supervised by Assistant Professor Miguel Alves Pereira for his PhD.
