Gustavo Alves holds a 5-years Degree, an MSc, a PhD, and a Habilitation in Electrical and Computer Engineering, from the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto (Portugal), since 1991, 1995, 1999, and 2023, respectively. He joined the Polytechnic of Porto - Instituto Superior de Engenharia (IPP-ISEP) in January 1994, where he is currently an Associate Professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering (DEE). He is currently responsible for the Centre for Innovation in Industrial Engineering and Technology (CIETI), an R&D unit based at ISEP, and recognized and financed by the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT). He also serves as Advisor for the Internationalization of ISEP, since May 2018. He participated in 14 national and international research and development (R&D) projects, coordinated ISEP's participation in 3 projects, and, finally, coordinated 4 projects, with a total funding amount exceeding one million euros. Author or co-author of 280+ publications, including book chapters, and articles in international journals and conferences, with a review committee, having also co-edited 3 books. His areas of interest include remote laboratories and technologies to support laboratory teaching and learning. He received the award for the best remote laboratory in the world, in 2015, by the Global Online Laboratory Consortium (GOLC), 5 awards for best article in international conferences, and career and/or service awards by the TAEE Association, the IEEE Education Society, and the Brazilian Society for Engineering Education (ABENGE). In terms of scientific supervision, he had the opportunity to supervise 3 post-Docs; 5 PhD Theses; 10 MSc Theses; 23 Degree capstone projects; and 17 BSc capstone projects, or Project / Internship in Erasmus Mobility. In total, he supervised 72 students, as some works involved more than one student. While acting as academic opponent, he had the opportunity to argue 12 PhD Theses, in Spain, Portugal, Brazil and Sweden; 4 MSc Theses, pre-Bologna model, in Portugal, Brazil and Sweden, and 27 Master's Dissertations, post-Bologna model, in Portugal and Norway. Gustavo Alves served as President of the Portuguese Society for Engineering Education (SPEE) between May 2018 and November 2020. He is a senior member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), and a member of the International Society for Engineering Pedagogy (IGIP), of the Portuguese Order of Engineers (OE), the Global Online Laboratory Consortium (GOLC) and the TAEE Association. He also served as program co-chair for the 1st and 2nd editions of the International Conference of the Portuguese Society for Education (CISPEE), the 3rd Experiment@ International Conference, and as general chair for the 11th REV conference edition, the 3rd TEEM conference edition, the 14th TAEE conference edition, and the 11th EDUCON conference edition. In total, he served as scientific or program committee member of 140+ national and international conference editions and delivered 70+ invited lectures. He is an associate editor at IEEE-RITA, having also served as associate editor at the IEEE Transactions on Learning Technologies (2016-2021) and guest editor at iJOE, iJEP, European Journal on Engineering Education and Computers in Human Behavior. He also served as a reviewer of 4 book chapters, 70+ articles in indexed journals (in several IEEE and ACM Transactions, iJOE, EJEE, JUCS, ASEE Computers in Education, among others), and 300+ submissions to national and international conferences. Through his participation in these associations and forums, he seeks to raise awareness in the international educational community about the importance of laboratories and experimental activities in Engineering Education, in general, and in the teaching and learning of electrical and electronic circuits, in particular.
