Dr. Lucas Pereira earned his PhD in Computer Science from the University of Madeira, Portugal, in 2016. Since then, he has been at ITI/LARSyS, leading the Future Energy research line. Since 2019, Lucas has been an Assistant Researcher at Instituto Superior Técnico, University of Lisbon. His research endeavors encompass the realms of data science, machine learning, and human-computer interaction, strategically aimed at bridging the divide between laboratory-based innovations and their real-world applications for sustainable development goals (SDGs). With a particular focus on future energy systems and sustainable built environments, his work often involves the practical deployment and assessment of monitoring technologies and software systems. Dr. Pereira has authored over 35 articles in reputable journals and presented numerous papers at conferences. Currently, he oversees the research efforts of six PhD theses while also serving as a co-supervisor for two others. Moreover, he has guided 18 MSc Dissertations. In 2022, Dr. Pereira was recognized as one of the top 2% most cited researchers according to the Stanford University Ranking. Dr. Pereira is the Principal Investigator of the ALAMO (Accurate Federated Learning with Uncertainty Quantification for DER Forecasting Applied to Smart Grids Planning and Operation) project, funded under the MIT-Portugal program. He is also the Principal Investigator of the SHIFT2DC (Shift to Direct Current) project, funded under the Horizon Europe framework program.
