Ana Paula Gil concluded her PhD in Sociology – Developments and Social Change – in 2007, at Faculdade de Ciências Sociais e Humanas, Universidade Nova de Lisboa. She has a Master in Sociology - Population and Family (1998) by Universidade de Évora and a Degree in Social Work, Instituto Superior de Serviço Social de Lisboa (1992). She is Assistant Professor at Universidade Nova de Lisboa, Faculdade de Ciências Sociais e Humanas, Department of Sociology. Between 2009 to 2016 she worked as a researcher and coordinated the first national prevalence study of elder abuse and neglect, in private households, in Portugal, funded by the Foundation for Science and Technology (2011-2014). She also participated in an international team to develop the first European Health Examination Survey (EHES) as part of a European initiative, promoted by the Finnish Institute of Health and Welfare (THL) from 2009 to 2011. Between 2013-2016, Ana Paula Gil, as Invited Scientist Fellow, participated in the study “Improvement of Epidemiological Health Information to Support Public Health Decision and Management in Portugal” (INSEF/05/DEP/2014), funded by the EEA Grants. She also has experience in the evaluation of public programmes in social development. From 2002 to 2009 she worked in the Research Unit at the Social Security Institute/ MSST)/Government, where she participated in several studies and evaluations programmes in the area of ageing, dependency, long-term care, health, family and social exclusion (poverty, homeless). She has experience in planning and implementing of national surveys (health, long-term care services, homeless, family surveys). She has two POSDOC projects funded by the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT): “Ageing in an Institution: An Interactionist Perspective of Care” (SFRH/BPD/107722/2015) and "Violence against the elderly: the invisibility of a problem" (SFRH/BPD/46014/2008). The interest on long-term care is related not only with her PhD. thesis, as well as the POSDOC project "Ageing in an institution: An Interactionist Perspective of Care"(SFRH/BPD/107722/2015). She published 31 articles in journals, 4 books and 6 chapters. Recently, she received 2 awards (1 international and 1 national) and participated in 6 international research projects. Her areas of interest are ageing and family issues, long-term care services and quality of care, public health and social policy.
