Maria Celeste de Sousa Silveira

With over three decades of experience in the field of psychiatry and mental health, I have held a variety of clinical, teaching, and research roles spanning both the public and private sectors. Since 1995, I have been actively contributing to the psychiatry service at CHUSJ, where I undertake comprehensive clinical work. Additionally, since 1999, I have maintained a clinical practice in the private sector, offering specialised psychiatric services. My experience as a psychiatric expert is noteworthy, having served as an expert for the National Institute of Legal Medicine and Forensic Sciences since 2021. Previously, between 2012 and 2019, I acted as a psychiatric expert for the Maia Labour and Civil Court, providing expert assessments and opinions. Since 2021, I have worked as a Forensic Psychiatry expert at the Institute of Legal Medicine and Forensic Sciences in the Northern Delegation. In the academic field, I have assumed various positions at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Porto (FMUP). Since 2019, I have been a Guest Assistant Professor of Psychiatry and Mental Health, contributing to the training of future mental health professionals. From 2014 to 2019, I had the honour of serving as an Assistant Professor of Psychiatry and Mental Health at the same institution. Furthermore, during the academic year 2014 to 2015, I was responsible for the Psychopharmacology discipline in the Integrated Master's in Clinical Psychology at the Lusíada University, Porto. Since 2001, I have been a Guest Assistant in Psychiatry and Mental Health at FMUP, as well as contributing as a teacher in the Master's Programme in Psychiatry and Mental Health at the same institution. Since 2023, I have also been part of the teaching staff of the Doctoral Programme in Forensic Sciences at FMUP. My involvement in research is extensive and diverse, with a particular focus on issues related to quality of life, epilepsy, and schizophrenia. My master's thesis focused on the quality of life in epilepsy patients, while my doctoral thesis investigated evoked potentials in schizophrenia patients, exploring the definition of endophenotypes. Currently, I am involved in research projects aimed at understanding the neural bases of neurocognitive abnormalities in schizophrenia patients, as well as brain changes in schizophrenia patients through magnetic resonance imaging. Additionally, I am committed to research on the quality of life in patients with movement disorders, both before and after intervention with Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS). My commitment to advancing knowledge in psychiatry, both in clinical and academic contexts, is reflected in my ongoing dedication to clinical practice, high-quality teaching, and innovative and meaningful research.
