Cátia Alexandra Figueiredo

I am a marine biologist devoted to studying the effects of climate change and emergent chemical stressors on marine biota. I'm sure it makes more sense to study climate change in conjunction with other factors that are also changing, such as the availability of Technology Critical Elements. Future climate and toxicological interactions are the combination of two areas of concern to which I intend to dedicate my coming years of research. I finished my degree in Biology in 2012, followed by a MSc in Marine Ecology in 2014, both at the University of Lisbon. From November 2014 until December 2015 I was a research fellow in the project MOLA, 31-03-05-FEP-37, funded by FCT/MEC (PIDDAC), with the objective of studying various aspects of the sunfish Mola mola: the fatty acid profile, heavy metal contamination, parasitic load, and migratory behavior (after release from a tuna trap). From June 2016 until September 2017 I was a hired member of the CLIMATOXEEL project, funded by FCT (PTDC/AAG-GLO/3795/2014), to study the effects of global climate change and neurotoxicants (heavy metals and pharmaceuticals) on the early ontogeny of the endangered European eel. In 2017 I won a Ph.D. scholarship, funded by FCT, to study the combined effects of climate change (e.g., ocean warming and acidification) and the emergent Rare Earth Elements, on a wide array of aquatic organisms, from fish to bivalves to algae. During this time, I won the scientific project "Effects of Rare Earth Elements on marine organisms under a changing ocean" in 2019, sponsored by National Geographic Society Committee for Research and Exploration. I also won financial support for women and Dependent Care in 2018 from National Geographic. In March 2022 I started working as a research fellow for the Interdisciplinary Centre of Marine and Environmental Research (CIIMAR), while based at the Portuguese Institute for the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA). I have been strongly engaged in national and international collaborations. I am a reviewer for 8+ journals, and an Invited Guest Editor of the Applied Sciences Special Issue "Environmental Bioaccumulation and Assessment of Toxic Elements". Since March 2023 I have been the co-Principal Investigator of the EMINENT project (Emergent interactive effects of climate change and contaminants, REF 2022.08285.PTDC), which aims to unravel the complex interplay between climate change and emergent technological pollutants and how it influences bioaccumulation and elimination processes and ecotoxicological outcomes in key bivalve species. I am an active and passionate member of several scientific societies, including SETAC - North America Inclisive Diversity Committee; SPECO -Portuguese Ecological Society and SORTEE - Society for Open, Reliable, and Transparent Ecology and Evolutionary Biology, which aims to improve reliability, repeatability, and transparency in eco. and evo. biology. I have 20 publications in international peer-reviewed journals, more than half of which as first author (12), that have been cited more than 180 times, and I present an h index of 8, according to SCOPUS. I have also published 3 book chapters, 1 as first author, and aligned with the open science policies I have published the entire datasets of my 3 most recent papers. My research has been presented orally at more than 20 national and international conferences and in 11 national and international conferences as posters. I won the Birgit Daus AWARD for best out-of-the-box communication in the final meeting of COST Action TD1407 (Technology-critical elements, Sources, chemistry, and toxicology) in Zagreb in 2019. I have also won several travel grants to attend scientific meetings in Norway, Portugal, the United States of America, Croatia, and Japan.
