Ana Filipa Esteves (AFE) has a Master's (2019) and a PhD degree (2024) in Environmental Engineering from the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto (FEUP). AFE was awarded an FCT PhD scholarship (FCT 2020.05477.BD) in 2020 under the topic “Shaping microalgal biomass composition for targeted product accumulation: impact of operational parameters”. Through her work, she developed innovative methodologies to enhance biomass productivity and biomass compound accumulation. Her scientific career started in 2019 at the Laboratory for Process Engineering, Environment, Biotechnology and Energy (LEPABE) and at the Laboratory of Separation and Reaction Engineering - Laboratory of Catalysis and Materials (LSRE-LCM). AFE is/was a researcher in several national and international projects, such as PIV4Algae, Power2Biofuel, PhotoBioValue and BLUE.FUTURE. In these projects, AFE worked closely with industry and academic partners, such as Galp, CITEVE, Aqualgae, Colep and Allmicroalgae, applying her expertise in experimental design, data analysis, and bioprocess optimisation. Throughout her research career, AFE has demonstrated a commitment to interdisciplinary collaboration and internationalisation. AFE participated in the Erasmus+ programme at Politechnika Slaska, Poland, for six months in 2018/2019. In 2023, she was a visiting researcher (6 months) with a stay at the University of Almería, Spain, where she expanded her expertise in photobioreactor design and nutrient optimisation under diverse environmental conditions and learned new biomass characterisation techniques, working within a funded project (BLUE.FUTURE). AFE’s research contributions extend beyond experimental work. She has published 19 peer-reviewed journal articles (8 as the first author, 3 as corresponding author and 1 as senior author) in high-impact international journals (Scopus based h-index 10; citations 352), of which 9 in Q1 and 5 in Q2 journals and 8 book chapters (3 as the first author). Additionally, her involvement in scientific dissemination has been noteworthy, having made 18 publications in international conference proceedings, 2 oral and 7 poster presentations. She was also a staff member at BioRemid 2019 conference and at Mostra da UP. AFE was the organiser of outreach activities, promoting R&I in public schools. AFE has co-edited the book Advances in Sustainable Applications of Microalgae, published by Elsevier. She has also served as a guest editor for a special issue of Algal Research in 2023, focused on microalgae for wastewater bioremediation, and as a reviewer for multiple international journals. In addition to her editorial work, AFE is responsible for resources and acquisitions management for the LEPABE research group on microalgae, facilitating the smooth operation of the team’s projects. AFE’s international experience has been further enriched through her participation in advanced training programmes, including the BlueBioValue Ideation Programme at Porto Business School, the SABANA Workshop in Spain and the Lisbon Microalgae Biotechnology 3rd Advanced Course. During her master’s, she participated in IJUP 2018, which deepened her knowledge of life cycle assessment (LCA) and sustainability. These opportunities allowed her to refine her technical skills in microalgal biorefineries and biotechnological applications. During her studies in FEUP, she was a Monitor Teacher at Universidade Júnior, where she interacted with and supervised secondary school students. She was also a Monitor Teacher during the Semana Profissão Engenheiro at FEUP. AFE has also supervised 3 Master’s students in FEUP (2 from Environmental Engineering and 1 from Bioengineering). With her extensive background in environmental engineering and microalgal biotechnology, AFE is well-positioned to make impactful contributions to both academia and industry, leveraging her skills in bioprocess optimisation, data modelling, and interdisciplinary collaboration.
