Bernardo A. Vicente completed a bachelor’s degree in biomedical engineering at the University of Trás-os-Montes e Alto Douro (UTAD) in 2021, with a final classification of 16/20. His final project in Biomedical Engineering, consisting of the deposition and cytologic studies of titanium dioxide films in stainless steel plates used for biomedical applications (classification of 20/20), led to the “Best Poster” and “Best Oral Presentation” awards at JobShop UTAD 2021. He continued his studies by pursuing a master’s degree in Materials Engineering at the University of Aveiro (UA), which he completed in 2023, obtaining a final classification of 18/20. His master’s dissertation, “Development of a wearable sensor to monitor respiratory parameters,” was scored 20/20 and led to the patent filing of the wearable device (provisional patent request - PT119103). From October 2023 to January 2024, he held a scholarship (CICECO Aveiro Institute of Materials - LA/P/0006/2020) with the purpose of developing machine learning (ML) algorithms for respiratory evaluation. In May 2024, he will start a new scholarship in project Cardioleather at CICECO. Aiming to contribute significantly to the global healthcare scenario by designing, creating, and validating new medical devices, his scientific expertise includes 3D modeling and simulation, additive manufacturing techniques, polymer characterization, biomaterials, biomimetics, ethical considerations in clinical studies, physiological signal processing, and ML. Bridging engineering and the creative arts, his diverse skill set empowers him to contribute innovatively across interdisciplinary projects. Besides the provisional patent, his academic repertoire consists of a patent-protected master’s dissertation, two conference posters regarding the topic of capacitive sensor design and fabrication for the development of wearable sensors to monitor breathing activity (one presented at “Materiais 2023” and another at “Encontro Ciência 2023”). Furthermore, he co-authored a poster presented at “Materiais 2023” regarding fiber-based capacitive wearable sensors. An additional poster focusing on statistical methods for wearable device validation was presented at the CICECO workshop “Artificial Intelligence for Materials Design.” Recently, he had a review paper accepted and published in Advanced Functional Materials.
