João Pedro Cachopo studied Musicology and Philosophy in Lisbon, Paris and Berlin, obtaining a PhD in Philosophy from the Universidade Nova de Lisboa in 2011 with a dissertation on Theodor W. Adorno's aesthetics. He currently teaches in the Department of Musical Sciences at the Universidade Nova de Lisboa (NOVA FCSH), where he coordinates the Critical Theory and Communication Research Group at the Centre for the Study of the Sociology and Aesthetics of Music (CESEM). His research interests encompass the intersection of aesthetics, politics and technology, as well as issues of performance, dramaturgy, remediation, spectatorship and criticism. He specializes in the interplay between opera and film. He is the author of "Callas e os Seus Duplos" (Documenta, 2023) and "The Digital Pandemic: Imagination in Times of Isolation" (Bloomsbury, 2022), originally published as "A Torção dos Sentidos: Pandemia e Remediação Digital" in Portugal (Documenta, 2020) and Brazil (Elefante 2021). The book version of his PhD dissertation on Theodor W. Adorno¿s aesthetics, "Verdade e Enigma: Ensaio sobre o pensamento estético de Adorno" (Vendaval 2013), received the Portuguese PEN Club Award in the First Work category in 2014. He is the co-editor of "Rancière and Music" (Edinburgh University Press, 2020), "Estética e Política entre as Artes" (Edições 70, 2017) and "Pensamento Crítico Contemporâneo" (Edições 70, 2014). His work has also appeared in international journals such as "The Opera Quarterly", "New German Critique" and "Sound Stage Screen", as well as in collective volumes, such as "The Routledge Companion of Music and Modern Literature". He has translated into Portuguese Georges Didi-Huberman, Jacques Rancière and Theodor W. Adorno. Between 2017 and 2019, he was a Marie Sklodowska-Curie Fellow at the University of Chicago. He taught as a Visiting Professor at the Pontifícia Universidade Católica do Rio de Janeiro (2016), the Universidade Estadual de Campinas (2016) and the Universidade de Brasília (2022). He was also a visiting scholar at the Universität Potsdam (2008), Université Paris 8 (2009), Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin (2010), University of Durham (2012) and Columbia University in the City of New York (2015). He presented his work in Argentina, Brazil, France, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Poland, Portugal, the USA and the UK.
