António is a Full Professor at the Instituto Superior Técnico, the largest school of engineering in Portugal by number of enrolled students, faculty size, scientific production and patents. He has been has been developing research mainly in Ecohydraulics, Hydraulic Structures and Environmental Hydraulics. He had leading roles and participated in several European and national research projects as a key-expert in ecohydraulics and hydraulic structures. He coordinated a task in the H2020 MARS Project (Managing Aquatic ecosystems and water resources under multiple stress) aiming to conduct river experiments in mesocosms and lab flumes (Water scarcity in Mediterranean rivers). More recently, he led a Work Package of the H2020 FITHydro project (www.fithydro.eu) devoted to the innovation of solutions, models, tools to assess self-sustained fish populations at hydropower plants in different European regions. His research outputs traduce in an h-index of 22, with more than 70 papers and 1700+ citations and 1 book. He co-coordinates the Doctoral Programme FLUVIO - River Restoration and Management). He supervised 10 PhD students and co-supervised other 2, and 23 MSc dissertations. He was President of the Portuguese Association of Water Resources (APRH) and member of scientific committee of the bi-annual Portuguese Water Congress.
