Cláudia Marques is a registered dietitian (0268N) specialized in Clinical Nutrition. She concluded her PhD in Biomedicine in 2018 at Faculdade de Medicina da Universidade do Porto (FMUP) and is currently an Assistant Professor at NOVA Medical School, Faculdade de Ciências Médicas, Universidade NOVA de Lisboa (NMS, FCM, UNL). From June 2022 to December 2022, she was in parental leave and interrupted her activities at NMS, FCM, UNL. She is the author of 2 thesis and co-author of 3 book chapters. She has published 1 commentary and 43 articles in international scientific journals and 3 articles in national scientific journals. Moreover, she has conducted more than 50 scientific communications (oral and panel) in several national and international scientific meetings mostly in the area of Nutrition and Dietary habits, Obesity, Gastroenterology and Gut Microbiota. She collaborates with national and international research groups (England, Ireland, Cabo Verde), private and public hospitals, research institutions and universities, within the framework of research partnerships and/or funded projects as principal investigator or team member. Cláudia was also a Management Committee Substitute in the COST Action CA18131 (ML4microbiome). She is focused on research aimed at solving society health problems, namely obesity and type 2 diabetes. Given that the gut microbiota can be an important therapeutic target in these diseases, she intends to explore other approaches for gut microbiota modulation beyond diet, which may work as an adjuvant therapy. The creation of YourBiome®, a spin-off of NOVA University of Lisbon was a step in this direction. In this context, she is leading a team to identify “super donors” with an algorithm based on dietary eating habits and gut microbiota composition. The identification of these donors will be essential to study the impact of faecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) and bacterial engraftment in subjects with metabolic disease, which will contribute to the development of new live bioterapheutic products. In parallel, the creation of the first intestinal microbiota bank in Portugal at NMS allow her to contribute for the successful implementation of FMT in the clinical practice as clinicians of different national hospitals may now request ready to use intestinal microbiota preparations for performing FMT in their patients. She is also conducting a clinical trial to evaluate the impact of probiotics in the success of bariatric surgery. The study of microbiota composition and function in obesity and how it affects adipose tissue function and systemic inflammation will allow her to explore new therapeutic targets for obesity and type 2 diabetes control. She is collaborating in several curricular units of the Bachelor’s Degree in Nutrition Sciences and the Integrated Master Degree in Medicine (pre-graduation) and in several curricular units of the Master in Human Nutrition and Metabolism, Clinical Research Management and NOVA Biomedical Research as well as the PhD program in Health Sciences (post-graduation). She also coordinated a post-graduation course to increase the knowledge of health professionals about the gut microbiota. She supervised/is supervising 13 masters students (10 concluded) and is supervising 4 PhD students.
