Vera Lúcia Maria (VLM) graduated in Biology from the University of Aveiro (UA) in 1993 and earned an MSc in Food Science and Technology from the Technical University of Lisbon in 1997. She completed her Ph.D. in Biology at UA in 2003. VLM began her research career as an integrated CIMA (University of Algarve) member, specializing in marine ecotoxicology and environmental omics (transcriptomics). At CESAM (UA), her work has focused on soil and freshwater ecotoxicology, nanotoxicology, and environmental omics (proteomics and metabolomics). VLM has contributed to nine FCT-funded projects, participating as both a researcher (five projects) and a grant holder (four projects) and she has been involved in four EU projects under FP7 and H2020 frameworks. Since 2019, she has been an assistant researcher at UA/CESAM. VLM was the principal investigator of an FCT-funded project (2018–2022) and the CESAM coordinator for a proof-of-concept project (CENTRO-01-0247-FEDER-181268; 2022–2023). As the leader of the UNRAvEL research team, VLM has managed the activities of doctorate researchers, supervised Ph.D. and master's students, and mentored over 26 undergraduate students. She has established collaborations with the Universities of Aveiro, Coimbra, and Porto, and international partners at the Universities of Santiago de Compostela, Vigo, Aarhus, and Salzburg. Since 2021, she has lectured practical classes in Microbiology and Genetics for BSc programs at UA, including Biology, Biotechnology, and Biochemistry degrees. VLM has co-authored 66 publications with over 1,500 citations and holds an h-index of 20 (WoS platform). She has delivered more than 40 presentations at national and international conferences. As a reviewer, she is active in many journals in which she has expertise and serves on the review board of Nanomaterials. Additionally, she has been a guest editor for four special issues in Toxics, Applied Sciences, and Nanomaterials. Committed to public engagement, VLM participates in science dissemination activities such as the Science Fair, Xperimenta-UA, Summer Academy-UA, and events organized by the Institute for Education and Citizenship, as well as outreach to pre-, basic, and high schools in the Aveiro district. Her main scientific interests are ecotoxicity; genotoxicity; omics; biomarkers; mixtures; soil and freshwater organisms; realistic concentrations; environmental contaminants: nanomaterials, nanoparticles, pharmaceuticals, and pesticides; and environmental remediation.
