Sharath Chandra Thota is a second-year PhD student at CIIMAR with a strong academic background, holding a Master’s in Biology of Extreme Environments from Italy, a Master’s in Biotechnology from India, and an International Diploma in Astrobiology from India. His research, funded by an AIR Center grant and supervised by Irina Gorodetskaya, Catarina Megalhães, and Markus Frey, explores the microbial diversity of atmospheric rivers over the Antarctic Peninsula—investigating their origins, transport, survival, and impact. Passionate about extreme environments and microbial life, Sharath has extensive fieldwork experience, accumulating over 100 hours across 13 locations, including both the Arctic and Antarctica. His expertise spans diverse microbial groups, including fungi, bacteria, viruses, haptophytes, and diatoms. He has also studied airborne SARS-CoV-2 during the COVID-19 pandemic. His previous research covers transgenerational epigenetic inheritance and microbial diversity in Svalbard permafrost. With international research experience in India, Italy, and Germany, Sharath has co-authored key publications in microbiology, contributing to infectious disease and environmental microbiology research.
