Rui Costa Martins (CEECIND/01780/2018) is a senior scientist and inventor at INESC TEC in the field of intelligent photonic systems. He has 40 ground-breaking patented inventions in intelligent spectroscopy systems (USA, EU, Brasil, China) with direct impact in key areas of medicine, veterinary medicine, biotechnology, and precision agriculture. The following inventions are highlighted: i. high-end miniaturized reagent-less, spectroscopy-based point-of-care (POC) for single drop clinical analysis of blood, serum, and urine; ii. advanced self-learning artificial intelligence system for analytical quantification of quality quantifications in complex biological samples, capable of solving multi-scale interference effects; iii. sub-optical and super-resolution laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy, enabling molecular and element identification, quantification, and molecular structure analysis; iv. direct spectral information transfer between spectroscopy systems, enabling large-scale spectral big-databases and the democratization of reagent-less point-of-care technology in medicine; and v. metabolomics spectral tomography technology for 3D/4D non-invasive chemical and metabolic imaging applications in precision agriculture and medicine. The scientific and technological excellence of his research has been recognized by 18 scientific and technological prizes/distinctions along his career. These include prestigious global engineering competition Idea2Product Global in 2010 (Austin-USA) and Best Young Researcher Award in Agricultural Engineering (2011) by CNOIV (most important world organization in the wine industry). In 2017, he won the first prize at XIII Montenegro Veterinary Congress with a veterinary spectroscopy-AI prototype for blood analysis. In 2018, he was distinguished by the Portuguese Physics Society for LIBS research work, and in 2019 by the Fraunhofer Research Institute/MDevNet for high-potential POC. More recently, he was awarded in 2018 and in 2020 by the Portuguese Society of Physics for significant development in LIBS technology, in 2019 by the Fraunhofer Research Institute/MDevNet for high-potential point-of-care technology and in 2021 by University of Porto/Amadeus Dias Foundation with the work in spectral metabolomics tomography. Rui Costa Martins research focuses on bringing low to high TRL, at the edge of human scientific knowledge into inventions with worldwide impact in our daily lives. Such is the case of his 4 licensed patents in POC technology to a multinational pharmaceutical company, which are also highly cited by high-profile inventors and companies in the medical engineering/devices research field developing reagent-less spectroscopy technology. Publication/Scientific output: i. 47 peer-reviewed research papers in top engineering impact journals with an h-index of 21, which corrected to engineering are h_coor=30.6 (source Google Scholar); ii. 40 international patents (4 licensed); iii. 3 book chapters; iii. 40 research projects: 25 as PI/Co-PI or Workpackage leader, 11 as a team member, and 4 as a consultant; iv. supervision: 2 junior PhD researchers, 11 PhD students, 7 MSc and 2 BSc; v. 7 high impact inventions in photonics; vi. 34 oral presentations in congresses (Keynote, Invited, Submission); and vi. 47 poster presentions. He is also part of the editorial board of MDPI Chemosensors scientific journal and editor of the special issue 'Intelligent Photonics for Chemical Sensing', and part of the scientific advisory board of CSAC2021: 1st International Electronic Conference on Chemical Sensors and Analytical Chemistry. He has also been a jury of European-funded projects (president and jury committee) managed by the National Agency for Innovation (ANI).
