Helena Prado Felgueiras
Doctor Helena Felgueiras (HF) is a Biomedical Engineer with a Master's degree in Biomaterials, Biomechanics and Rehabilitation
(from Universidade do Minho, Portugal, acquired in 2011) and a PhD in Biomedical Engineering (specialization in Biomaterials,
from Université Paris 13, France, acquired in 2014). Her interests range from the functionalization of biomedical surfaces
with bioactive polymers, antibiotics, antibodies, natural extracts, proteins and peptides to the study of cell and molecular
biology events at the interface. She is also invested in uncovering the microbiology profile of biomaterials and bioative
agents against bacteria, fungi and bacteriophages. She has developed biomedical surfaces for bone repair and substitution,
and blood contacting medical devices. Nowadays, she is focused in uncovering new forms of treatment for chronic wounds using
bioactive molecules, such as antimicrobial peptides and natural extracts, immobilized onto biocompatible, biodegradable polymeric
micro to nanofibrous matrices. HF works as an Auxiliary Researcher (2021.02720.CEECIND) at the Centre for Textile Science
and Technology from University of Minho. She is the author of 1 book (and edited another 5 books), 7 book chapters, 6 editorials,
62 articles (29 as senior author), and 22 proceedings, with a h-factor of 24 (Scopus). HF has international collaborations
with >10 countries, reflected in published work (>130 co-authors). She has given 154 national and international communications
(1 plenary, 1 keynote, 7 invited, 75 oral and 70 posters). She collaborates in 13 national and/or EU projects (10 completed)
being the principal investigator in 5, and supervises/supervised 1 junior researcher (completed), 5 research assistants
(completed), 10 PhD students (2 completed), 1 visiting PhD student (completed), 13 MSc students (8 completed), 3 BSc students
(completed) and 2 technicians (completed). HF has also been the recipient of 21 awards and 15 distinctions, which include
laboratory manager, editorial board member (>205 verified editor records) and topic editor positions, works as a reviewer
for >120 journals (>700 verified peer-reviews) and has been in the organizing and scientific committees of various conferences.
Additionally, HF has been part of the evaluation committee of international project grants. In 2023 and 2024, HF was listed
amongst the "World's Top 2% Scientists" most cited (University of Stanford and Elsevier ranking).
