Dr. Filipe Neves dos Santos is a Principal Investigator/Senior Robotics Researcher at the CRIIS Unit of INESC TEC (Porto, Portugal), where he also coordinates the cross-disciplinary TEC4AGRO-FOOD initiative, focused on accelerating digital innovation and sustainability in agriculture and forestry. He is the founder and scientific manager of TRIBE LAB, a reference research laboratory dedicated to the development of robotics, IoT, and AI-based solutions for smart and precision agriculture and forestry systems. He holds a PhD in Electrical and Computer Engineering from the University of Porto (FEUP, 2014), a Master’s in Automation and Robotics from Instituto Superior Técnico, University of Lisbon (2007), and a BSc in Electrical Engineering from the Polytechnic Institute of Porto (2003). With over 20 years of research experience, his expertise spans mobile robotics, embedded systems, robot perception, autonomous navigation, and field robotics. Between 2007 and 2010, he co-founded and served as COO/CTO of OMNITA – Sistemas Autónomos para Monitorização, S.A., a drone-based startup supported by InovCapital and Invicta Angels. This experience deepened his focus on transferring research into high-impact, real-world applications. As Principal Investigator, Dr. Santos has led or contributed to more than 30 national and European R&D projects (H2020, Horizon Europe, PRR, P2020, POCTEP, ESA, FCT), always in close collaboration with end-users, industry, and public entities. He was the coordinator of the European project SCORPION, focused on developing robotic technologies for precision agriculture in sloped and complex terrains — a project successfully completed and recognized as a reference case in EU innovation. At TRIBE LAB, he has designed and implemented a long-term research roadmap for autonomous and modular agricultural machinery, addressing strategic domains such as steep-slope viticulture, forestry biomass harvesting, and urban/protected cropping systems. Under his leadership, the lab has built over 40 robotic and IoT prototypes, many demonstrated at TRL 7+, covering use cases including monitoring, precision spraying, selective harvesting, and semantic navigation. He has published over 130 peer-reviewed scientific articles, holds four patent submissions, and has received several national and international awards, including the iF Design Award, the TIMAC/EXPRESSO Innovation Prize, and the Portugal Digital Award. Beyond academia, Dr. Santos is a frequent speaker at international seminars and conferences, including as an invited expert for the EU-CAP / European Commission Seminar on Robotics and AI for Agriculture and Forestry, and currently serves as Chair of the AgriFood Topic Group at ADRA (AI-Data-Robotics Partnership). He also actively contributes to public science outreach through interviews, media appearances, and participation in public debates on the future of digital agriculture and sustainable food systems. He has supervised six PhD students , and supervises 10 ongoing PhD students, and over successfully supervised more than 40 MSc theses completed, and is currently an invited professor at the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Porto (FCUP), where he lectures on Precision Agriculture, contributing to the development of highly qualified professionals in digital farming and environmental innovation. With a strong interdisciplinary profile and a deep commitment to innovation, Dr. Filipe Neves dos Santos plays a leading role in robotics and smart agriculture, advancing technologies that support climate-resilient, efficient, and sustainable agroforestry systems in Portugal and across Europe.
