I (Jingzhong Xiao) obtained my PhD degree in Physics and Optics, from the Anhui Institute of Optics and Fine Mechanics (Hefei Institute of Physical Sciences) of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, China, in Aug. 2003. The topic of the thesis was the synthesis and characterization of lead based piezoelectric and relaxor ferroelectric crystals, such as Pb(Zn, Nb)O3-PbTiO3 (PZNT). I joined the CEMDRX (laterly CFisUC) of FCTUC in Dec. 2009, being an Auxiliary Researcher supported by FCT Science 2008 program (5 years duration). My R&D background and research interests are mainly focused on the field of materials science and engineering (and olid state physics), which are related to the fabrication of advanced functional materials and their structure-property characterization in macro- or nano- scales, including: 1) flux growth for high Curie temperature ferroelectric crystals; 2) the wet chemical synthesis of multi–ferroics with the material forms of ceramics, nano-powders, coating powders, thin films and thick composite films, 3) development of nanomaterials for fabrication of novel solar cells and for used into hydrogen energy storage; 4) through the cooperation with one Chinese researcher, I participated in an important Chinese project that growing and characterizing the hybrid perovskite crystals; etc. Since joined the department of Physics of university of Coimbra, I had considerably achieved accomplishments in several aspects. Firstly, via the support of the program of Science 2008 and the FCT project of PTDC/FIS/116146/2009, I conducted the novel research of high-Tc ferroelectrics in CFisUC (or CEMDRX), and built the conditions to carry out the flux growth of the ferroelectric crystals. Secondly, I also built up several equipments for the materials fabrication, such as the equipments of spin coating machine, EPD devices, thermal sealing machines, etc; through which some advanced functional materials such as ferroelectrics, multi-ferroics, nano-materials for solar cells could be fabricated. Thirdly, I directed and engaged some novel research areas (topological insulator, dye sensitive solar cells, core-shell structure multi-ferroics, laser crystals, nano-structures for hydrogen storage, etc.) into the host research center, through which the excellent scientific outputs will possibly be generated. In addition, I also was particulaly enthusiastic and have strong wills for applying research funds to facilitate the research works. Main scientific contributions: 1.Development of novel high curie temperature ferroelectrics The xBiInO3-(1-x)PbTiO3 (BIPT) crystals based solid solution (Tc > 650oC) was firstly and successful growth. 2. Development for texture ferroelectric thin films 3.Development for novel nano materials for hydrogen storage TiO2 is an important photocatalyst candidate for solar energy or hydrogen energy harvesting. A facile sol–gel fabrication of mesoporous TiO2 microspheres is utilized. 4.Research for dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) I built the experiment condition and equipments for research DSSCs in our Lab. The TiO2 nanorod arrays (TNRs) were used as photoanodes of dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). 5.Development for novel perovskites solar cells Based on the DSSCs researches, I also started the research work for developing novel perovskit solar cells based on the CH3NH3PbX3 perovskites. 6.Structural design and property tailoring in novel mid-IR laser crystals 7.Synchrotron radiation investigation on fine structure and multi-domains coupling behavior in relaxor ferroic crystals 8. Crystal Growth and Topographic Study of Tetragonal Single Crystals used to grow functional thin films. 9.Development relaxor type ferroelectrics such as PZN-PT crystals. 10.Fundamental researches of magnetoelectronics and multiferroics based perovskite structures. 11. Development for novel laser crystals and optic fibers. etc.
