I am a Científico Titular (since December 2023) at the Biogeography and Global Change group, Museo Nacional de Ciencias Naturales, CSIC. I am a former Ramon y Cajal and Marie Curie Fellow with an i3 certification. My main research focus is to predict how natural ecosystems respond to global environmental change. Publication record: I have published 28 peer-reviewed articles (13 as 1st author; 5 as 2nd author; 4 as senior author) in a range of different journals from broad scope (i.e., Nature, Nature Communications, Trends In Ecology and Evolution and Bioscience) to theoretical journals (i.e., Oikos); from ecological (i.e., Ecology, Methods in Ecology and Evolution) to biogeographical (i.e., Ecography); from microbiological (Frontiers in Microbiology) to aquatic journals (e.g., MEPS, Marine Biology, Aquatic Biology). Impact: All my articles were published in SCI-indexed journals (Average IF = 6.1) and 93% (24 out of 26) ranked in the first quartile (Q1 “Multidisciplinary Sciences”, Q1"Ecology" and Q1 "Microbiology"; source: ISI Web of Knowledge). These leading journals include Nature, Nature Communications, Trends in Ecology and Evolution (x2), Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (x2), Global Change Biology, Methods in Ecology and Evolution, Ecology, Ecography, J. Animal Ecology and Frontiers in Microbiology. I have an h-index of 19 (source: Google Scholar) and > 1300 citations of which 60% of them in the past five complete years (2020-2023), corresponding to an average of >100 citations a year. Leadership: I have leadership contributions (1st, 2nd or senior author) in over 85% of my publications. These numbers reveal two important aspects of my scientific track record: (1) a clear ability to lead scientific publications with a range of different co-authors and in different topics, and (2) that my citation record is almost exclusively the result of publications that I was actively involved with. International co-authorship: I have led scientific publications in a range of different topics and with different sets of collaborators (>120 co-authors from >25 different countries, including US, Canada, Mexico, Brazil, Argentina, and Australia). This has allowed me to co- author publications with several influential ecologists, biogeographers and paleolimnologists, including Tony Underwood (Australia), Michel Loreau and Nicolas Mouquet (France), Mathew Leibold (USA), Jonathan Chase (Germany), Erik Jeppesen (Denmark), Miguel B. Araujo and Santiago Giralt (Spain). Teaching and supervision: I am currently supervising 2 MSc (Univ. Evora and Univ. Menendez Pelayo). I have supervised have one PhD thesis (Catia Pereira, completed in Dec 2022); 12 Undergraduate (TFGs), 6 Master’s (TFMs) and 2 CSIC’s Introduction to Research Fellowships (JAEs). Research funding: I have co-written funding applications that have attracted over 1.7M€ (over 780k as Principal Investigator), including EU’s Horizon 2020, Spanish and Portuguese funding agencies. I have secured competitive individual fellowships, including Marie Curie and Ramoon y Cajal. Conferences: I have also presented >27 communications (24 as first or senior) in international meetings (including 4 invited keynotes: last one in January 2022). Editorial roles: I am Subject-Editor at Ecography since October 2014 where handle about 10 manuscripts per year. I have reviewed manuscripts for 17 different journals including Nature Communications, American Naturalist, Ecography, Oikos among others.
