Joana Reis de Almeida (JRA) has a BSc in Marine Biology (2006, University of Açores) and PhD in Biomedical Sciences (2012, ICBAS-University of Porto). She is Assistant Researcher (CEEC IND 2022) at the Interdisciplinary Center of Marine and Environmental Research of the University of Porto (CIIMAR-UP) and she is Invited Assistant Professor at Faculty of Sciences, University of Porto. JRA is Group Leader of the Bioinspired Ocean Interfaces (BiO) research group at CIIMAR, supervising a team including 4 Post-doc, 2 PhD students, 3 MSc and 2 research technicians. JRA acts in the areas of Natural Sciences, Environmental Sciences, Marine Biology and Biotechnology, and her current research interests focus on marine biofouling and the search for eco-efficient antifouling strategies based on new alternative environmentally compatible products, and also establishing the link between marine environment and human health through biological interfaces. She has more than 30 publications in ISI journals and 5 patents on antifouling bioactivity of new compounds. She is now Principal Investigator of 2 ongoing projects on the bioprospection of alternative and sustainable antifouling strategies - a knowledge-transfer approach in cooperation with sustainable aquaculture industry for antifouling infrastructures improvement and a nanoengineering approach of new antifouling matrices in cooperation with a specialised startup (SMALLMATEK). She received personally two awards, one of them an international award for her PhD work (SETAC Europe); and in 2021 the work of her team received two distinctions in 2 prestigious International conferences, Best poster spotlight (ECMNP 21) and Best Oral presentation (ICBB 21). She organized, and participated in more than 50 scientific events. She interacted with more than 150 collaborators in her scientific activities, as co-authors of her publications, both national and international. On the side of dissemination and exploitation of her scientific outputs, she participated in several science dissemination actions, science literacy and outreach activities.
