Carmen S. R. Freire (borned in 1976) studied Chemistry in the University of Aveiro (UA) and received the DOW Portugal award for the best student (degree in Chemistry in 1998). Then, in 2003 she has got a PhD degree in Chemistry, also by the UA, with 10 paper published from the PhD work. In the period of 2003-2005 she had a post-doc fellow position in the Department of Chemistry of UA and in the École Française de Papeterie et des Industries Graphiques (presently Pagora) (Institute Polytechnique de Greboble). In 2006 she became a staff member of CICECO-Aveiro Institute of Materials, as Auxiliary researcher, and since June 2013 as Principal Researcher (Biorefineries and Bio-based Materials). Carmen Freire participated in 21 National projects (4 as PI, 3 as PI at UA, 1 as Co-PI, and 1 as PI of 3-sub-projects, and 12 as member of the team) and in 8 European projects as member of the team; and was the Nacional Cordinator of the Cost Action FP1405. She is presently contributing to 7 national projects (1 as PI at UA, 2 PI of WPs, and 1 as Co-PI, and 3 as member of the team) and 1 European project. She was member of the Executive board of EPNOE- European Polysaccharide Network of Excellence from 2015 to 2018 and is Vice-president for Conferences and Workshops since 2019. She is member of the Coordination Board of the Plataforma Tecnológida da Floresta-UA. Carmen Freire published more than 250 papers (with more than 13800 citations, H-index 66); most of them were published in top speciality peer reviewed Journals on the area of biopolymer based material. She is also (co)author of 16 patents (and applications) , 13 book chapters, 3 books and about 300 oral and poster communications (including 20 invited talks) in national/international scientific meetings. Carmen Freire has a large experience in PostDoctoral (10, of which 1 in progress) PhD (21 of which 11 in progress), MSc (55 of which 3 in progress) and graduation (around 3-4 per year) students supervision, and in teaching at BSc, MSc and PhD level. She is cooperating for a long time in the teaching service of the Chemistry Department. She has been a member of evaluations panels of projects and groups in Sweden, Finland, France, Chile and Portugal (ANI- Agência Nacional de Inovação), as well as in juries of academic degrees in Portugal and Europe. She has been also a regular referee for leading journals, such as Biomacromolecules, Carbohydrate Polymers, Green Chemistry, ACS Sustainable Chemistry and Technology, ACS Applied Materials and Interfaces. RESEARCH INTERESTS Her research interests are centered on the production and application of biogenic nanofibers (bacterial cellulose and protein fibrils), novel nanostructured biocomposites and hybrid materials; new bio-based materials for biomedical applications (wound healing and drug delivery); bioinks for 3D-bioprinting, new biocomposites and functional paper materials; chemical modification of chemistry of lignocellulosic materials (cellulose, wood, cork, etc.); and isolation, characterization and chemical transformations of bioactive components.
