In 2008, Carlos de Oliveira Amorim enrolled in the Integrated master’s in engineering physics at the University of Aveiro, which he completed in 2013, receiving the award for best Bachelor student and the BPI award for best final year (Master) student. From an early stage, he realized he wanted to pursue a career as a researcher, thus he applied and was awarded with a PhD grant from FCT. With this grant, he joined the MAP-Physics doctoral program, which he completed with honors in 15-02-2019 thanks to his experimental study and computational modeling of Fe/BaTiO3 multiferroic heterostructures. Also in 2019, he was awarded a postdoctoral grant in the "Smart Green Homes" project, a co-promotion project between the University of Aveiro and BOSCH. In this project, the he was involved in the design and construction of the first Portuguese magnetocaloric heat pump prototype. In December 2019, he was awarded a postdoctoral grant in the "NEXTRA" project, a co-promotion project between the University of Aveiro and Efasec, aiming to develop "soft-magnets" for application in high-efficiency electrical transformers. In November 2022, he became an Assistant Researcher in the FantastiCoF project, where he studied 2D materials with exotic electronic properties and 2D Hydrogen Evolution Reaction catalysts using computational modeling. Since September 2023, he has been working as a Researcher in the New Generation Storage project, from the PRR agenda, where he prepares and characterizes oxide-based Thin Film Solid State Electrolytes and Thin-Film photovoltaics. This way, the candidate has been acquiring extensive experimental and computational experience in materials for energy applications. Throughout his career, he published 45 articles in SCIE journals (2 of which were selected for cover), resulting in 559 (482) citations and an h-index of 13 (12) according to Google Scholar (Scopus). He has also communicated his findings to the scientific community through 18 oral presentations (1 "Invited") and 15 posters at international conferences such as JEMS, Intermag, ICM, and MMM. At national conferences, he has 11 oral presentations (4 "Invited") and presented 22 posters. He is an active member of the scientific community, having participated in 18 research projects as a team member or grant/contract holder. He was an invited Chairman of session S14.A - "Magnetocalorics and Shape Memory Alloys" at the JEMS2020 conference. He has also served 60 times as a referee for SCIE journals such as ACS Applied Materials & Interfaces, PCCP, RSC Advances, among others. He was a guest editor of the "Journal of Magnetism and Magnetic Materials" (for the special edition of JEMS 2020) and is currently a guest editor of "Pharmaceutics" (IF2022=5.4 in Q1), responsible for the special issue: "Novel Drug Delivery Systems: Magnetic Gels". Since 2021, he has been a permanent jury member in several research grants, namely 4 Postdoctoral grants (BPD), 2 Research Initiation Scholarships (BII), and 9 Bachelor student Researcher Scholarships (BI). Student mentoring is something that he considers very important, having already supervised 4 Bachelor students and is currently supervising 1 PhD and 1 Master student. He is also one of the founding members of “Núcleo Português de Magnetismo” (NPM), an association that aims to bring together researchers working in magnetism and promote their networking. NPM has organized 2 conferences in the last 3 years and a School in magnetism metrology, where he was also one of the invited lecturers. Carlos Amorim research interests span through several scientific areas, including Condensed Matter Physics, Energy harvesting, Photovoltaics, Energy Storage, Solid State Batteries, Solid State Electrolytes, Magnetic Properties, Thin Films, Multiferroic Heterostructures, Nanomagnetism, Magnetic Hyperthermia, Permanent Magnets, Soft Magnets, Magnetocaloric Materials, Computational Modeling, among others.
