Ildefonso Marin-Montesinos

ACADEMIC BACKGROUND I obtained my BSc in Chemistry from the Universidad de Sevilla in 2001. In October 2003, I began a PhD at the University of Southampton funded by an EPSRC grant. Under Malcolm H. Levitt's supervision, I specialized in the development of recoupling methods in solid-state NMR for biomolecules, establishing a strong foundation in advanced NMR techniques. RESEARCH CAREER In November 2007, I joined Ulrich Günther’s group at the University of Birmingham as a postdoctoral researcher, gaining my first experience with Dynamic Nuclear Polarization (DNP). In 2010, I was awarded the Beatriu de Pinós and Juan de la Cierva grants to join Miquel Pons’s Biomolecular NMR Laboratory (IRB-Barcelona and Universitat de Barcelona). During this period, I broadened my knowledge of DNP, protein-ligand interactions, and built an international network of collaborators. From 2015 to 2018, I held a Labex ARCANE Postdoctoral Fellowship in Gaël de Paëpe and Sabine Hediger’s laboratory (CEA-Grenoble and Université Grenoble-Alpes). My work focused on carbohydrate-protein interactions using Magic-Angle-Spinning DNP (MAS-DNP) solid-state NMR in lectins. In 2019, I joined CICECO—Aveiro Institute of Materials as a researcher in Luís Mafra's team. My work leverages NMR and MAS-DNP to study porous materials and biomaterials with applications in gas separation, CO2 capture, and catalysis. I am also developing independent research lines in structural biology and new NMR methodologies. CURRENT RESEARCH LINES a) Biochemistry/Biology: 1. Characterization of interaction interfaces in clathrin-mediated endocytosis using solid-state NMR, neutron reflectometry, and QCMD. 2. Study of antimicrobial peptides interacting with mimetic membranes. 3. Structural characterization of brewer's spent yeast glucan and its role in receptor recognition. b) Porous Materials for CO2 Capture: 1. Amine-modified silicas. 2. Valorization of industrial bioresidues. 3. Covalent Organic Frameworks. 4. Periodic mesoporous organo-silicas. 5. Polysaccharide-derived solid CO2 sorbents. 6. Lithium silicate sorbents. These materials are characterized through adsorption isotherms, NMR/DNP-based speciation and quantification, degradation studies, and recyclability assays. c) NMR/DNP Methodological Developments: 1. 3D-printing of NMR probe components. 2. LAST 5 YEARS INDICATORS • Projects Funded: 1 Instruct-Eric project, 1 EMBO short-term fellowship (ILL-Grenoble), 2 NHFML grants (DNP instrument access), and 1 ILL-Grenoble grant (neutron technologies access). Currently, work is funded under an ERC Consolidator Grant (PI Luís Mafra) as part of the European Consortium on Solid-State NMR (PANACEA). • Supervision/Mentoring: Supervised 5 PhD students, 3 MSc students (retained as PhDs in the group), and 7 BSc students. • Scientific Production: Published 15 research articles in Q1 journals (348 citations; 3 as first author, 5 as corresponding author), delivered 5 talks, and presented 14 posters at international conferences. • Awards: Winner of the Blue Bio Value Ideation Prize (2021, Porto, as team leader), EMBO Fellowship, and Universidade de Aveiro Researcher Award (2024).
