Marisa Naia has a Bachelor degree in Biology (2017) and a Master degree in Biodiversity, Genetics and Evolution (2019), from the University of Porto, Portugal. She started her scientific career during the academic internship, where she studied the predator-prey behaviour of the Iberian lynx and the European rabbit, using camera-traps in southern Portugal. In her Master thesis she addressed landscape connectivity in aquatic habitats as a core strategy for biodiversity conservation in arid regions. After, she worked in science communication in a European project (PONDERFUL), which aims to understanding how ponds, as a Nature-Based Solutions, can help society to mitigate and adapt to climate change, protect biodiversity and deliver ecosystem services, and in a National environmental education project (Ponds with Life). She has published 8 papers in national and international scientific journals and presented her work in three national and international congresses. She has gained a Rufford Small Grant as primary investigator to study the population ecology of an Endangered lizard in Mauritania. She co-supervised four Bachelor students in their academic internship in Biology. Along her academic and professional path, she acquired knowledge in systematic conservation planning, biogeography, species ecology, geographic information systems, science communication and outreach and gain fieldwork experience in different environments. Presently, she conducting her PhD project, which aims to integrate the landscape changes analysis and amphibian community characterisation of Mindelo Ornithological Reserve (Portugal), with the development of citizen engagement activities through science communication to ensure science-based measures for amphibian conservation.
