Ana Sofia Soares

Ana Sofia Carvalho Soares, graduated in Aquatic Sciences in 2019 at the University of Port (15/20) and obtained a MSc degree in Applied Marine Biology in 2021 at the University of Aveiro (18/20). After finishing my MSc, I worked as an assistant researcher for the Deep-Sea Biodiversity and Conservation Team on the DEEPbaseline project, focused on developing a baseline of fisher’s local ecological knowledge on the spatial occurrence of deep sea vulnerable marine species and ecosystems of the Portuguese mainland shelf and slope. I am currently a PhD student at the Marine Science, Technology and Management program, It is an international and cross-border doctorate program offered by the member universities of the Campus do Mar: in Galicia (Spain) the universities of A Coruña, Santiago de Compostela and Vigo, and in the north of Portugal the universities of Aveiro, Minho and Tras os Montes and Alto Douro and the University of Porto. My PhD project is being developed in the Deep-Sea Biodiversity and Conservation Team (CIIMAR) and is focused in Integrating Fishers’ Ecological Knowledge and Scientific Knowledge to support mapping and conservation of deep-sea vulnerable marine ecosystems in Portugal. Until know, I have been been involved in 7 projects, and at this time I have been working with the projects DEEPbaseline, SponBioDiv, Bio-Protect, DEEPrelicts and TwinDEEPS. Author of one chapter published in a scientific book, and one oral presentation at a international conference. Works in the field (s) of marine biology (megabenthic species), social science (interviews and questionnaires with fishing communities) and biodiversity conservation (vulnerable marine ecosystems).
