My undergraduate studies started in 1992 at Instituto Superior Técnico, in Portugal. In 1997, I was selected to work with the Supernova Cosmology Project for 9 months in Berkeley. The work of this group revealed that the Universe is currently accelerating, and this discovery was worth the Nobel Prize in Physics 2011 and in 2007 and 2015 I was one of the awarded members with the Gruber Prize and the Breakthrough Prize for Fundamental Physics, respectively. In 1998, I started a PhD at U. Sussex under supervision of Prof. Copeland, working on models of dark energy. I proposed one of the most widely used models of quintessence in the literature. During my first postdoc (2002) at Queen Mary U. London I informally supervised one PhD student working on Loop Quantum Cosmology. I have also raised the possibility of reconstructing the equation of state of dark energy using the cosmological variations of the fine structure constant if measured. In 2004, I accepted a postdoc at U. Minnesota to work with Prof. Keith Olive. We showed that it is possible to alleviate the Big-Bang Nucleosynthesis primordial Litium 7 abundance problem by considering the variation of fundamental couplings in the context of unification theories. I was a postdoc at DAMPT, U. Cambridge from 2006 to 2008. I was also a Research Fellow of Robinson College, which means that I was member of the governing body of the college, had undergraduate teaching duties and was part of the selection committee for undergraduate entry to the University. I informally supervised 2 PhD students from the U. Nottingham. Here I worked on inflation in the context of loop quantum cosmology and together with Prof. Barrow, proposed the “Logamediate” model of inflation. In 2008 I joined U. Heidelberg. I was PI of a bilateral project between DAAD and FCT and informally supervised 2 undergraduate students from U. Porto. I did pioneer work on applications of three-forms in cosmology. With the experience gained on principal component analysis, I wrote a section in the subject for the Euclid theory document and soon I joined the consortium. In 2011 I moved to the U. Lisbon. I lead a team within an FCT funded exploratory project (35K eur including a postdoc). We worked on de Sitter attractor solutions in the Hornedski Lagrangian and one of the product articles received an honorable mention of the Gravity Research Foundation Essay competition. I taught a master course on Early Universe for three years and I taught General Relativity and Cosmology for seven years. I was an Erasmus+ professor at Complutense Madrid, and I was invited to lecture at the University of Cape Town and University of Naresuan schools. I established a regular seminar series and a journal club. I was one of the organizers of the conference IberiCOS in 2012 an IDPASC school in 2013, an Euclid Consortium meeting in 2016, a cost action CANTATA meeting in 2016 and the main organizer of IberiCOS 2018. For two years I was the leader of the cosmology research group and from 2018 to 2020 I served as member of the coordination of the Institute of Astrophysics. In 2021 I became an Assistant Professor at the Faculty of Sciences meaning that my dedication to teaching has increased. In addition, I also coordinate the Department of Physics Image Commission. Seven master students under my supervision have completed their degree, all with top marks. One PhD has also finished his degree. Currently I am supervising one PhD student and one master student. I have refereeing duties for a dozen of international journals in the fields of Cosmology and Astroparticle Physics. I was the external examiner of 2 Master and 7 PhD degree thesis. Scopus, acknowledges over 100 articles that I co-authored which have been cited over 18K times (5.8K once excluding the Supernova Cosmology Project seminal paper) and my h index is h = 37.
